Fundraiser Race in Buccleuch Park to Benefit Brain Aneurysm Foundation and RWJ

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital are raising funds to fight brain aneurysms, and launching a new annual 5K run and 1.5 mile walk to do it.

The inaugural run/walk will take place this Saturday, September 20, in Buccleuch Park.  On-site registration for either the run or walk begins at Buccleuch Park at 7am. The 5K will start at 8 a.m., and the 1.5-mile walk will start at 9 a.m.

Rutgers Students Raise $22K to Kickstart Turkish Towel Company

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Last month, a group of Rutgers students launched an online campaign to raise $10,000 to launch a company called PSTML, which aims to connect a small village in Turkey to consumers all over the world.

But the group was pleasantly surprised when they surpassed that fundraising goal just four days into the one-month campaign, which was hosted on the popular fundraising website Kickstarter.com.

All together, the fundraiser brought in $22,386 from 332 supporters.

Christie Nominates Chivukula to Serve as BPU Commissioner, Creating Opening on Democratic Ticket

TRENTON, NJ—One of New Brunswick's three elected representatives in Trenton could be leaving office soon if the State Senate approves a nomination made by Chris Christie.

On September 18, Christie announced three nominations for Commissioners to serve on the state's Board of Public Utilities, including longtime Democratic Assemblyman Updendra Chivukula.

The new job would include an annual salary increase for Chivukula, from the $49,000 earned by Assembly representatives, to the $125,000 paid to the BPU's commissioners.

Rutgers Students Charged With Lighting Bedsheet on Fire From Their Apartment Building

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A couple of current Rutgers students allegedly decided to light up the night early Saturday morning by igniting a bedsheet as it hung from the second story windows of their apartment building at 75 Easton Avenue.

At about 2:50 am, New Brunswick police noticed what was initially described as "a flag on fire," hanging from the building known as "The Easton" and dispatched firefighters to the scene, according to radio transmissions.

City Council Votes on $868K Water Privatization Agreement Negotiated by Mayor

UPDATE: The City Council voted 4-0 to approve the water privatization deal with NJ American Water, with Council President Rebecca Escobar abstaining because she was not aware that a vote would be held.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The City Council will again revisit a controversial deal made by Mayor James Cahill to privatize the management and day-to-day operations of the city's embattled Water Utility.

At Least 11 People Were Arrested at First Rutgers Big 10 Football Game

PISCATAWAY, NJ—Rutgers University Police arrested nine people for a slew of offenses during the course of the evening Saturday night, while Piscataway police arrested two more for disorderly conduct.

It wasn't just any Saturday night, though.  It was the first-ever Big 10 football game for Rutgers University, and the first football game to sell out the stadium in years.

Rutgers lost to Penn State 13-10, but the 8pm kickoff time led to many arrests before the game even started.

Review: A Streetcar Named Desire Makes a Stop at Villagers Theatre

FRANKLIN, NJ—A major issue when staging an iconic drama, such as the one that takes place at 632 Elysian Fields Avenue in New Orleans’ Faubourg Marigny, is the ghosts of every past performance, be they film or live can hijack the stage.

Director Judi Parish and a fine cast of actors exorcised those ghosts and kept them out of Villagers for opening night. Even the well-known “Stella” shout was exclusive to this performance.
