Free Screening of Spanish Language Film on Water Rights

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Several non-profit organizations are teaming up to host a free screening the award-winning "También la lluvia" (”Even the Rain”), a Spanish language film exploring the twin forces of water privatization and colonialism in Bolivia.

The screening will be held Wednesday, August 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Unity Square Community Center at 81 Remsen Avenue, followed by a bilingual discussion.

NBPA Hopes to Make Extra $300,000 Per Year by Increasing Parking Meter Rates Yet Again

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The New Brunswick Parking Authority (NBPA) is requesting that the City Council increase the rates at most of the city's 1,000 parking meters, a move that would bring in $300,000 to the NBPA.

Though they are already among the highest in New Jersey, the increased rates would make it more expensive to park at New Brunswick's meters than at those in the state's largest cities.

City Asks Company to Retrieve Uprooted Red Light Camera

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Drivers and privacy advocates won a huge victory in December, when New Jersey ended its 5-year pilot program that brought red light cameras to many communities in the area.

Since then, the Hub City may be the first to actually take down one of the cameras, which have eerily remained standing across the state despite being turned off.

One of the two cameras at the intersection of Easton Avenue and Park Boulevard has been uprooted and left on the side of the road near Buccleuch Park.

Rutgers Football Lands Four-Star Safety Originally From Ottawa

PISCATAWAY, NJ—Rutgers football team secured a huge recruiting victory on August 8 when safety Patrice Rene chose the Scarlet Knights over Ohio State, Penn State and other schools.

The highly-touted defensive back declared his intentions to play football on the banks through a post on Twitter.

“I have decided to further my education and football career at RUTGERS UNIVERSITY,” Rene wrote.

Governor Christie Vetoes Bill That Would Have Expanded Recovery High School Program

TRENTON, NJ—Governor Christie vetoed a bill on August 10 that would have created three additional recovery high schools for addicts in New Jersey.

The recovery high school pilot program was established on Kean University's campus, and passed in 2014. The law created the first school in the state that focused on recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.

Rutgers Club Gymnastics Holds Car Wash to Raise Funds

PISCATAWAY, NJ—The Rutgers Club Gymnastics Team will be having a free car wash on Saturday, August 15 from 9am-2pm at the Applebees located on 1282 Centennial Ave in Piscataway.

The Rutgers Club Gymnastics team is a student-run organization that represents Rutgers in competitions without the same financial benefit of being a varsity team.

"We also have various fundraisers throughout the year through meets that the team members work and other public events," said Caela Lenhardt, a member of the team.
