Friends of New Brunswick Library Host Annual Book Sale

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On April 15 and April 16, the New Brunswick Free Public Library (NBFPL) will be hosting their annual book sale at their location at 60 Livingston Avenue.

The Library’s book sale is an annual event that takes place each April, and is organized by The Friends of the New Brunswick Public Library, an organization whose mission is to “encourage library awareness, promote use of the library, and encourage reading and life-long learning."

More Than 35,000 Verizon Workers Go on Strike Across East Coast

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–As many as 39,000 Verizon landline and cable workers based on the East Coast abandoned their jobs on April 13, amid stalled negotiations concerning their contract, which expired nearly eight months ago.

The employees are members of two unions: The Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). 

The Verizon workers have gone on strike to "save good jobs and ensure quality service for customers," according to the CWA. About 5,000 are employed in the Garden State.

Rutgers Women Organizing Against Harassment Takes Back the Night

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On April 13, Rutgers students and supporters marched for a long-standing tradition called Take Back the Night.

Take Back the Night (TBTN) is an organization working to end gender-based sexual violence.

It has been active since the 1960s, and thousands of colleges, domestic violence shelters, and rape crisis centers have held events in solidarity during TBTN's history.

Sears Chain Borrows Again, Will Sell More Assets and Cut Costs

CHICAGO, IL–Fighting to stay relevant amid falling revenue and company losses, Sears has turned to a compnay that manages the fortune of billionaire Bill Gates for its latest round of financing.

The retail chain said, April 8, it entered into a 15 month $500 million “secured loan facility” secured by mortgages on 13 Sears and Kmart stores owned by the company’s subsidiaries.

Franklin Police Shoot and Kill 27-Year-Old Man on Somerset Street in New Brunswick

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On April 9, a 27-year-old man named Diahlo Grant became the second person to lose his life to gun violence in the Hub City this year.

Authorities say Grant, who lived in the Somerest section of Franklin Township, was killed "during an exchange of gunfire" with Franklin Township police officers at approximately 1:31am near the border between the two towns.

Cuatro Candidatos Fueron Aprobados Para la Elección de la Junta de Educación del 19 de Abril

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ– La Junta de Educación rechazó uno de los cinco candidatos que presentaron peticiones para participar en la contienda para ocupar los puestos de la Junta de Educación en las próximas elecciones de 19 abril.

"Joel Martínez entregó una petición deficiente porque la mitad de las personas que firmaron no fueron votantes registrados. Entonces él solo obtuvo seis firmas válidas," dijo Richard Jannarone, Administrador de Negocios del distrito.
