VIDEO: Solo la Mitad de los Candidatos a la Junta Escolar de New Brunswick se Presentaron a Foro

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ– El Centro Comunitario Unity Square ubicado en la Avenida Remsen fue el anfitrión de un pequeño foro de candidatos el 12 de abril, el mismo que se llevó a cabo a solo una semana de que los votantes de la ciudad elijan quienes serán los tres candidatos que formaran parte de la Junta de Educación.

Por primera vez en la corta historia de elecciones de la Junta Escolar de la ciudad, un foro de este tipo fue presentado tanto en Ingles, como en Español.

Focus on School Violence Thrusts Ex-NBPD Director Into Spotlight

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Under pressure from community advocates and the New Brunswick Today newspaper, school officials released attendance records to show the days and hours that one of its top employees worked.

Peter Mangarella, the Director of School Security, was apparently away on vacation as a major controversy unfolded in his shop, after a 15-year-old was attacked by a fellow student at New Brunswick High School (NBHS).

Landlord’s Sentencing on Cocaine-Dealing and Weapon Charges Delayed For Fifth Time

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A landlord who owns four properties in New Brunswick, and allegedly dealt cocaine to the city's Chief Housing Inspector, will continue to be a free man for the time being.

For at least the fifth time in a year, the sentencing of Paul Cano III has been delayed.  Cano was busted in December 2013 along with longtime city inspector Michael Mahony, and later pled guilty to first-degree distribution of cocaine and possession of an assault rifle on March 23, 2015.

Unite Half Marathon and 8K Runs Through Rutgers Campus For Seventh Year

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Mother nature delivered perfect weather on Sunday, April 17, for the Rutgers Unite Half Marathon and 8K.

The two races are organized by CGI racing, a Garden State-based company, and race management division of Carson Group International, CGI's event management division.   

“One of the largest half-marathons in New Jersey, the race will bring over 6,000 runners to the campus of Rutgers University,” boasted CGI in a news release about a week before race day.

VIDEO: Only Half of School Board Candidates Show Up to Forum

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Unity Square Community Center on Remsen Avenue played host to a small candidate's forum on April 12, held with one week left before Hub City voters decide which three candidates to serve on the Board of Education.

For the first time in the city's short history of school board elections, it was the first time such a forum was presented in English and Spanish.

On Heels of Speech by Supreme Court Justice, President Obama Agrees to Speak at 2016 Rutgers Graduation

PISCATAWAY, NJ—For this first time in history, a sitting President of the United States of America will speak at the Rutgers University commencement ceremony, which commemorates the graduation of some 12,000 students at the school's football stadium.

The distinction is an honor for the 249-year-old university that started in New Brunswick, as the current President typically only speaks at two to four such ceremonies each year, including at least one military academy, according to NJ.com.

Two Former Scarlet Knights Selected in 2016 WNBA Draft

UNCASVILLE, CT—A Rutgers women's basketball program that has made a habit of sending players to the pros continued to do so on April 14, when former Scarlet Knights guard/forward Kahleah Copper and center Rachel Hollivay were selected in the 2016 WNBA Draft.

Copper became the seventh first-round pick in Rutgers history, and the first since Epiphany Prince in 2010, when she was selected seventh overall by the Washington Mystics.
