Largest Graduating Class in Rutgers History Prepares For Commencement

PISCATAWAY, NJ—This Sunday, Rutgers University will be holding its 248th annual Commencement Ceremony, the first since merging with the University of Medicine and Dentistry at NJ (UMDNJ).

The ceremony, held at the school's football stadium on Busch Campus, commemorates the thousands of students set to graduate this year.  The event starts at 12:30pm and is open all members of the general public, though it is recommended that attendees arrive in advance to ensure they can get a good seat.

North Brunswick Man Sentenced to 6 Years For Manslaughter in Killing of Oswaldo Lozada

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Eduardo H. Escobar-Landaverde has worked out a plea deal with the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office after admitting to the killing a rival gang member in the Hub City.

The incident occurred on January 9, 2012, in the vicinity of Somerset and Louis Streets in New Brunswick.  Escobar-Landaverde fatally shot Oswaldo Lozada, 21, prosecutors say.

Escobar-Landaverde, a member of the 18th Street gang reportedly said that he carried a weapon for the purpose of firing upon rival gang members.

Theatre Review: Rent at East Brunswick’s Playhouse 22

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ—Johnathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning rocked up reworking of Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème, is being staged at the East Brunswick Community Arts Center by its resident theater company, The East Brunswick Community Players/Playhouse 22.

Instead of Paris’ Latin Quarter in the 1830s, we find ourselves in Manhattan’s Alphabet City during the AIDS crisis on Christmas Eve in the late 1980’s.

Owing $1 Million to NBPA, New Brunswick FreshGrocer Closes After Just 18 Months in Business

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—TheFreshGrocer is cutting and running on the Hub City after a failed attempt to open their first supermarket in New Jersey.

After telling the city they would close on May 24, the store abruptly shut down for good at 1:30pm this afternoon.

The store stopped paying its $78,000 monthly rent after just two or three months, according to NJ.com.

Double Dippers, Part 2: County Government Lawyer Also Favored Attorney of Hub City Developers

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Middlesex County's top government attorney  also works for some of New Brunswick's biggest developers including Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, leading many to ask if there is an inherent conflict of interest at play.

Tom Kelso doesn't meet the traditional definition of a "double-dipper," because he only has one public job and is not yet collecting a pension.

VIDEO: Amid Protests Over Pedestrian Crash, County Fast-tracks Proposed Changes to Livingston Avenue

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A report issued in March by Rutgers University suggested major changes to Livingston Avenue, but the changes proposed came too late to prevent a tragic crash that seriously injured three local children last week.

However, some ideas in the 24-page report have now been fast-tracked by Middlesex County, which owns the dangerous road.
