Helmetta Animal Shelter Placed Under Quarantine

UPDATE (11/15): The City of New Brunswick announced on its website yesterday it was "temporarily" using Blumig Kennels in East Brunswick, as a result of the quarantine at Helmetta Regional Animal Shelter.

HELMETTA, NJ—As of November 13, no animals will be going into or out of the Helmetta Regional Animal Shelter following a quarantine by the county Department of Health and a raid by the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJSPCA).

Rutgers Belly Dance Troupe Hosts Annual Fall Hafla

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On Friday November 14, at 8pm in Trayes Hall of the Douglass Student Center, located at 100 George Street the Rutgers Belly Dance Troupe will be hosting their biggest event of the semester, known as the “ Fall Hafla.”

Hafla, an Arabic term meaning “party,” is a Rutgers Belly Dance tradition that takes place in both the fall and spring semesters of each school year.

Hundreds Pack City Hall For Vote Encouraging NJ to Give Driving Privileges to Undocumented Immigrants

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On Wednesday, November 5, the city's Latino community came out in full force to attend a City Council hearing on a resolution calling on New Jersey's government to issue "driving privilege cards" to undocumented residents.

The massive turnout, which rivaled the largest crowds ever to attend a New Brunswick City Council meeting, was organized by Faith in New Jersey, a multi-racial and multi-faith network working to advance a "social justice agenda."

Report of Criminal Sexual Contact on College Avenue Sparks Tenth Rutgers Crime Alert in 35 Days

UPDATE (11:34PM): Rutgers Police announced that 19-year-old Danwitt D. Jean-Baptiste, of Roselle, has been arrested and charged with one count of criminal sexual contact in this case.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—According to a Rutgers crime alert, a female student reported being approached by an unknown man while walking on College Avenue between Hamilton Street and Seminary Place at approximately 2pm on November 10 .

NAACP Freedom Luncheon Brings Sarah Collins Rudolph to First Baptist Church in Somerset

SOMERSET, NJ—The New Brunswick branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held their 41st annual Freedom Fund Luncheon on November 1, entitled "All In For Justice and Equality: Yesterday and Today – Continuing the Struggle".

The event took place at the First Baptist Church at 771 Somerset Street, just days before the general election.
