Largest Graduating Class in Rutgers History Prepares For Commencement

PISCATAWAY, NJ—This Sunday, Rutgers University will be holding its 248th annual Commencement Ceremony, the first since merging with the University of Medicine and Dentistry at NJ (UMDNJ).

The ceremony, held at the school's football stadium on Busch Campus, commemorates the thousands of students set to graduate this year.  The event starts at 12:30pm and is open all members of the general public, though it is recommended that attendees arrive in advance to ensure they can get a good seat.

$197 Million Board of Education Budget Up For Public Vote

Editor's Note: Registered voters can vote in today's school election at their regular polling locations between 7am and 9pm.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Voters in the Hub City will decide whether to give their seal of approval to the New Brunswick Board of Education's 2014-2015 budget, as approved at the board's March 25 meeting.

The $198 million budget, and in particular the $27 million to be raised from local property taxes, will be put to city voters tomorrow in the form of a ballot question.

Federal Court Questions Changes to Hospital Pension Plans

TRENTON, NJ—U.S District Judge Michael A. Shipp ruled on March 31 that the Saint Peter's Healthcare System pension plan does not constitute a "church plan," allowing a case against the hospital to move forward.

The decision has come amid the highly controversial and unpopular move by the hospital to exempt its pension plan from the requirements of the Employment Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), citing the status is typically granted for religious organizations.

Rutgers Philosophy Department Gets Two Big Donations

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers University's Philosophy Department, on the the school's most highly-regarded departments, will be receiving two gifts totalling $3 million to fund an an endowed chair for the department.

"The University will use the chair to attracted another distinguished philosopher to the department," says a University press release.

$1.5 million was provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the other $1.5 million by an anonymous donor.

Weeklong Hub City Music Festival Raises Funds For City Soup Kitchen

NEW BRUNSWCK, NJ—The Hub City Music Festival, a series of local concerts to benefit Elijah's Promise, will be running for its second annual year starting on Saturday April 5.

Performances are set to kick off 9 pm this Saturday at the Court Tavern, and will run over the next week, leading up to the final show 8 pm on Saturday April 12 at World of Beer.

Other venues participating include a popular new bar and restaurant called Destination Dogs, Hidden Grounds coffee shop, the Crossroads Theatre, and the soup kitchen itself.

Rutgers Professor Fights Bedbugs in New Brunswick Housing Projects

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers entomologist Changlu Wang has been working on new methods to eradicate bedbugs, and testing those methods in the City of New Brunswick's public housing units.

Currently, the New Brunswick Housing Authority operates approximately 1,400 public and assisted housing units within the city.  

Wang is a Professor in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) at Rutgers University, who specializes in entomology, the scientific study of insects.
