Rutgers President Defends Selection of Condoleezza Rice as Commencement Speaker

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers University President Bob Barchi issued a statement to the university community on Friday defending the selection of Condoleezza Rice as the 2014 commencement speaker.

"Whatever your personal feelings or political views about our commencement speaker, there can be no doubt that Condoleezza Rice is one of the most influential intellectual and political figures of the last 50 years," Barchi wrote.

Rutgers Hires Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice as 2014 Commencement Speaker

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Condoleezza Rice, the former National Security Advisor and US Secetary State, has been named one of the commencement speakers for the 248th graduation ceremony at Rutgers. 

The decision to hire Rice, who served as the first black female Secretary of State from 2005-2009, was made in a unanimous vote by the Rutgers University Board of Governors last week in Newark.

New Brunswick Observes Black History Month

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Officials from both the City of New Brunswick and Rutgers University are planning to hold events in observation of Black History Month. 

The Hub City kicked off its celebration of Black History Month with a screening of Freedom Riders at the New Brunswick Free Public Library on February 1.  The documentary recounts the experiences of civil rights activists in the 1960's, as they travel into the Deep South to challenge local segregation laws.

Rutgers Marching Band to Perform at Super Bowl

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ—As New Jersey prepares for its first Super Bowl, the Rutgers University Marching Band is set to perform alongside another college band for a TV audience of millions.

The joint performance by the marching bands of Syracuse and Rutgers will take place around 6pm, shortly Superbowl XLVIII kicks off in East Rutherford's MetLife Stadium.

Tim Smith, director of the marching band at Rutgers, has stated that audiences will receive something different from the usual halftime performances.

New Jersey Film Festival Kicks Off Tonight at Rutgers

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The New Jersey Film Festival, hosted every year in New Brunswick, will be kicking off tonight on the Rutgers University campus.

The festival, which is hosted by the Rutgers Film Co-Op, New Jersey Media Arts Center, and the Rutgers University Program in Cinema Studies, will feature documentaries, workshops, short films, guest independent and international films. 

There will also be guest appearances from producers, directors and actors involved in some of the films.
