PARK(ing) Day Returns to Hub City, Expanding to 3 Locations

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–September 18 marked the return of "parklets" to New Brunswick, courtesy of PARK(ing) Day, a nationwide event celebrating green spaces in urban areas.

The concept, thought up by anti-automobile thinkers in San Francisco, is to turn metered parking spaces into parklets, also known as "PARK(ing) spaces," for a few hours.

This year, from 10 AM to 5 PM, three spaces in different locations, were turned into parklets.  Each pop-up parklet had a different theme.

Bikeway Traffic Signal on George Street Leads to Local Tie-Ups

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – Commuters, Rutgers students and residents in have found themselves subject to massive tie-ups on George Street as a result of a recently constructed pedestrian-favored traffic light known as a HAWK signal. 

Rather than the vertical green-yellow-red light that most motorists are accustomed to, the the High-intensity Activated crossWalk (HAWK) signal features two red lights placed horizontally above a single yellow light.

Rutgers and Food Network Team Up For Hunger Action Month

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On September 17, in an intimate gathering in the Douglass Student Center at Rutgers University, the Community Food Bank of New Jersey (CFBNJ) and Rutgers Against Hunger (RAH) teamed up to educate the public on hunger.

The meeting began with a brief introduction to the 40-minute special presented by the Food Network, followed by a video showcasing three families across American who struggled with food insecurity.

Hub City’s Only Music School Provides Services to Kids and Adults, Including Those With Special Needs

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Located on Bayard Street, the Octopus Music School has been providing music education for special needs children since November 2010.

Fresh out of Rutgers University, owner Joseph Fekete has created the only special needs program of music in the New Brunswick area.

“I believe we are the only music school in the area and county,” said Fekete. “Our special needs services provide to disabilities such as Autism and Down’s syndrome.”

Brooklyn-Based Artist’s Work on Display at Rutgers Douglass Library

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Brooklyn-based artist Chitra Ganesh has brought her artwork to New Brunswick, and her work will be on display in the Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series Galleries at the Mabel Smith Douglass Library.

This gallery is open to students, as well as the public, and will be on display from September 1 to November 3.

Ganesh has been named the 2015-2016 Estelle Leibowitz Endowed Visiting Artist in Residence.

NBPD Officer Punished For Uniform Violation After Internal Investigation

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A city police officer with a bad habit of not wearing his department-issued nameplate has been discplined for violating the New Brunswick Police Department's (NBPD) uniform policy on multiple occasions.

An Internal Affairs investigation sparked by this reporter found that Officer Jeffrey Monticello had failed to wear his name badge, a mandatory part of the standard uniform.
