Rutgers Muslim Student Association Holds Candlelight Vigil for Victims of North Carolina Shooting

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–A crowd of more than 200 people came out to the steps of the Brower Commons for a candlelight vigil held for the three Muslim college students killed in a February 10 shooting in Raleigh, North Carolina.

They came out despite the freezing cold weather, carrying signs and candles, sharing their thoughts and expressing grief over what is now believed to be a fatal dispute over parking in an apartment complex near the campus of the University of North Carolina.

RadioShack Files For Bankruptcy, Announces Swift Closure of 50 NJ Stores

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–RadioShack Corporation filed for bankruptcy on February 5, and disclosed that it had reached an agreement to sell as many as 2,400 of its 4,000 U.S. company-owned stores to hedge fund Standard General L.P.

The electronics retailer said it will close the remaining stores it owns, beginning with New Brunswick's George Street location, and 49 others in New Jersey.

Free Chinese Kunqu Opera Show For Valentine’s Day

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—At 7pm on Saturday February 14, a special Valentine's Day opera will be hosted on the Rutgers campus.

"The Splendor of Chinese Kunqu Opera" will be performed at the Nicholas Music Hall, located at 85 George Street on the Douglass campus of Rutgers.  The event is free and open to the public.

Performers were invited to travel from Beijing, China for this event, making for an authentic Chinese opera performance.

Audible Crosswalks Approved For Four Intersections in Edison and Woodbridge to Aid Blind Pedestrians

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Representatives of a local disabilities advocacy organization came out to the February 5 Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders meeting to express support for a resolution installing audible crosswalks at four county intersections.

The Alliance Center for Independence had worked with the mayors of Edison and Woodbridge for a year and a half to secure permission and funding to have the equipment installed at intersections near the center's headquarters at 629 Amboy Avenue in Edison.

Residents Give Input at First Public Meeting on Livingston Avenue Safety Study

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Community members were able to formally give their input on how to address safety on Livingston Avenue, one of the county's most dangerous roadways.

Nearly 50 area residents came to the brand-new Redshaw Elementary School on February 11 for the first of a number of planned public input meetings on an engineering study, with the goal of making that roadway safer for all users.

NBPD Arrests 11 on Charges of Breaking Into Convenience Stores, Stealing Lotto Tickets and Cigarettes

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) announced that detectives arrested eleven people in the early morning hours on February 11, saying that they were involved in a series of four different after-hours burglaries of city stores in the past month.

"In each instance several suspects would approach the glass door or window of a convenience store and throw a large object, usually a brick or cinder block through the window allowing access to the store," reads the NBPD press release.

Rite Aid Buys Leading Independent Pharmacy Benefit Manager For $2 Billion

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Rite Aid Corporation and Envision Pharmaceutical Services announced on February 11 that Rite Aid will acquire EnvisionRx, a portfolio company of private investment firm TPG, for about $2 billion, according to a Rite Aid news release.

Envision, a national full-service pharmacy benefit manager, offers pharmacy and mail-order services, in addition to traditional options through its EnvisionRx and MedTrak networks.

Rite Aid’s stock was up by as much as 12% on February 11, in reportedly heavy trading of its shares.
