New $32 Fee For Tracking Software Surprises Rutgers Students, Raises Privacy Concerns

UPDATE (2/8): This article has been updated to include additional statements from Rutgers University's spokesperson.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—As of the spring 2015 semester, students taking an online course at Rutgers Mason Gross School are directed to purchase tracking software that scans student's faces, knuckles, and photo ID's, in an effort to ensure academic integrity.

Deadline Missed For Environmental Inventory Grant Application

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Up against a tight deadline to apply for a grant from PSE&G, the City Council decided not to move forward with the grant application at a recent meeting.

The decision means that the New Brunswick Environmental Commission and the city's Green Team will likely have to wait another year to secure funding that would allow for the accounting of the city’s environmental resources.

New Brunswick Temp Agency Owners Facing Up to 20 Years in Prison on Fraud Charges

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ— The longtime owners of several temporary agencies in New Brunswick and other communities were arrested on first-degree charges, during raids executed on February 3.

The owners of the agencies, a Milltown couple named Andres and Jenny Minaya, is charged for allegedly hiding more than $30 million of income, underreporting the number of employees their company outsourced, insurance fraud, and filing a false tax return.

If convicted, the couple faces up to 20 years in prison.

First GoogleX Event in New Jersey Takes Place at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ—Ever wonder where ideas for products like Google Glass and Chromecast come from?

Here’s a hint, not every product that displays the Google brand name originates in Silicon Valley.  Sometimes the ideas behind these inventions come from people all over the world who just like to dream big.

Google Developer Group (GDG) North Jersey hosted it’s first ever "GoogleX" event on February 2 at Rutgers University's Livingston Campus.

Environmental Commission Rolls Out Initiatives to Engage Public in Sustainable Practices

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—At their January 20 meeting, the New Brunswick Environmental Commission and several allied city organizations announced a spate of 2015 initiatives meant to engage the community in sustainable practices and encourage the upkeep of public and open spaces in our area.

On the agenda was the unveiling of a plan that will allow residents to see how they can take advantage of the many community gardens which serve as a source of fresh produce for consumption by the public and other organizations dedicated to food security and assistance.

Juvenile Facing Arson Charge For Allegedly Starting Fire in McKinley School Bathroom

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—An elementary school student is facing charges of aggravated arson after a fire last month at the McKinley Community School, according to city officials.

The fire did not injure anyone, and the damage was minimal, but it required an evacuation, the re-location of staff and students to a nearby building, and the cancellation of after-school activites on January 20.

"According to NBFD, a young kid set a small fire on the hand sanitizer dispenser," said city spokesperson Jennifer Bradshaw.
