City Man Arrested in Ohio, Charged in Fatal Drive-By Shooting

COLUMBUS, OH—Authorities announced that a third suspect was being held in Ohio's capital city on charges of murder and the conspiracy to possess a handgun related to a fatal shooting in New Brunswick.

Following an investigation that involved the US Marshalls, 19-year-old city resident Steven Perez was arrested on April 15, 2014 at 2:25 p.m. at a house in Columbus, Ohio.

Perez was charged in the drive-by shooting death of Raheem Fuqua, a 30-year-old man who was shot outside his home on Seaman Street on March 1.

New Brunswick Little League Kicks Off 2014 Season

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—New Brunswick's Little League officially kicked off its season with an Opening Ceremony on April 12 at the Youth Sports Complex at 419 Joyce Kilmer Avenue.

Many special guests attended the event which also celebrated the 75th anniversary of Little League International.

New Brunswick Mayor Jim Cahill threw out the first pitch and Congressman Frank Pallone was in attendance to present a letter of recognition to the league.

Health Care Industry Week Draws Hundreds to Rutgers Campus

PISCATAWAY, NJ—The second annual New Jersey Health Care Industry Week, held during National Public Health Week, opened with a free job fair on April 7 at Rutgers Univeristy's  Busch Campus Center.

More than 30 employers were on site networking with more than 300 attendees interested in exploring healthcare professions.

The job fair focused on making people aware of opportunities in behavioral health and was the first of five events scheduled around the state last week.

Tyler Clementi Center Hosts Lecture on Gender Identification Outside America

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On March 27, the Tyler Clementi Center hosted a lecture entitled "Transforming Transgender Beyond American Borders: Cultures, Categories, Communities," in the Alexander Library's Teleconference Lecture Hall on College Avenue.

The talk explored sexual and gender identification outside of the United States and featured Professor Martin F. Manalansan IV, a University of Illinois associate professor of Asian American Studies, Anthropology, and Gender and Women's Studies.

Federal Court Questions Changes to Hospital Pension Plans

TRENTON, NJ—U.S District Judge Michael A. Shipp ruled on March 31 that the Saint Peter's Healthcare System pension plan does not constitute a "church plan," allowing a case against the hospital to move forward.

The decision has come amid the highly controversial and unpopular move by the hospital to exempt its pension plan from the requirements of the Employment Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), citing the status is typically granted for religious organizations.

RWJ Hosts Day of Hope For Child Abuse Prevention Organization

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—In honor of the "National Day of Hope," Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) and Prevent Child Abuse New Jersey (PCA-NJ) hosted a workshop titled “Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention: Basics 101” on April 2.

National Day of Hope is observed on the first Wednesday of every April as part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Over 30 participants were in attendance including RWJUH staff, nurses, nursing students, medical students, chaplains, and other local community members.
