Timeline: Mike Rice Scandal Unfolds at Rutgers

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—According to a report commissioned by Rutgers officials, several members of the school's administration knew about the alleged misconduct of head basketball coach Mike Rice months before the scandal unfolded last week.

In May 2010, Athletic Director Tim Pernetti hired Rice as the Rutgers men's basketball coach.  Rice allegedly abused the team's players, calling them names including homophobic slurs and throwing basketballs at their heads and bodies.

Library Seeks Submissions for 6th Annual Photo Contest

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The New Brunswick Free Public Library, located at 60 Livingston Ave, will hold its Sixth Annual Photography Contest over the next two months. 

This year's theme is "New Brunswick: My City," and anyone is eligible to enter up to three of their own original photos.  The only rule is the photos must have been taken between April 8 and June 14.

Submissions will be judged by professional photographers, as well as the library staff.

Prosecutor Charges Man Shot by City Police with Weapons Offenses

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Earlier today, the Middlesex County Prosecutor announced the identity of a man shot yesterday afternoon by city police and the charges against the suspect.

Authorities say that 26-year old male Akeem Williams was walking down Sanford Street past the Anesh Emethe Memorial Temple at 222 Livingston Avenue, when he fired the handgun he was carrying and was gunned down by city police near the interesection of the two streets.

Armed Suspect Gunned Down by NBPD on Sanford Street

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Around 12:30 pm this afternoon, an armed man was shot by New Brunswick Police officers at the corner of Livingston Avenue and Sanford Street.

The suspect, who was carrying a handgun according to police, was shot by local officers in front of Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple at 222 Livingston Ave.

The gunman was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he is being treated and held as a prisoner.

Firefighters Battle Early Morning Blaze on Suydam Street

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Firefighters spent roughly two hours this morning combating a blaze that started in a residential home on Suydam Street near the Northeast Corridor railroad.

The fire broke out at around 4 am, waking neighbors and catching the attention of passers-by on the main thoroughfare.

It eventually spread to two adjacent homes, damaging them and displacing at least 20 residents.  Multiple companies responded to battle the fire, including those from New Brunswick, Edison, East Franklin, and East Brunswick.

No Crime Alert For Slashing Incident at Easton and Somerset

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Neither city police nor Rutgers University notified the public of an incident where a man was slashed in the chest with a knife in front of the Corner Tavern last Saturday morning.

The crime incident occurred on the corner of Somerset Street and Easton Avenue in New Brunswick at around 2:22 a.m., according to a report by NJ.com's John Clayton.
