New Brunswick Poets at National Spoken Word Event in NYC

NEW YORK, NY—Rutgers University's spoken word poetry group, Verbal Mayhem, was invited to the 2013 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) at Barnard College in New York earlier this month

Shireen Hamza, Alyea Pierce, Dennis Sholler, and Kate Thomas represented Rutgers-New Brunswick at the national competition.

There was a total of 59 teams invited to CUPSI, and each team performed at least twice in the preliminary bouts.

Latest Trend in Downtown Retail: Frozen Yogurt

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Just in time for warm weather, three new frozen yogurt shops have opened in downtown New Brunswick.  All four spots in town – Red Mango, Let’s YO!, Top It, and Truly Yogurt – serve frozen yogurt with a unique twist.

Frozen yogurt, affectionately referred to as "froyo," is similar to soft-serve ice cream.  It tastes great, is low in fat, and it is packed with calcium, protein, and probiotics that help the immune and digestive systems.

BOE Candidates Debate Their Views at Unity Square Forum

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—For the first time in city history, candidates seeking positions on the powerful Board of Education spoke in the same forum, held last night by the non-profit Unity Square.

The six candidates seeking three open positions, including all three incumbents, answered eight questions submitted by audience members, in addition to giving opening and closing statements.  Video is available exclusively through NewBrunswickToday.com.

Man Killed in Head-on Crash on Joyce Kilmer Avenue

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Police and firefighters responded to a fatal accident on Joyce Kilmer Avenue Monday night where one man was killed and two others were injured.

At approximately 6:08 p.m., a burgundy Toyota 4-Runner was traveling southbound on Joyce Kilmer Avenue near the intersection with 8th Street when it collided with a silver Toyota 4-Runner traveling northbound on the same street, according to police.

Pernetti and Two Others Forced Out in Wake of Rutgers Scandal

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers director of intercollegiate athletics Timothy Pernetti resigned Friday following an embarrassing scandal involving the misconduct of head basketball coach Mike Rice.

Pernetti played football for Rutgers in the early 1990's, and he made the unusual jump from television executive to college athletics director in 2009 when he was hired to the $410,000 job by then-President Richard McCormick.
