NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Around 12:30 pm this afternoon, an armed man was shot by New Brunswick Police officers at the corner of Livingston Avenue and Sanford Street.
The suspect, who was carrying a handgun according to police, was shot by local officers in front of Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple at 222 Livingston Ave.
The gunman was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he is being treated and held as a prisoner.
According to police transmissions, a New Brunswick resident saw a male that was approximately 24 years old walking past her car holding a small  handgun in his hand, and immediately notified New Brunswick police.
The suspect was identified by police as a black male wearing a brown and tan plaid shirt, jeans, and baseball cap walking from Joyce Kilmer Avenue and Ward street towards downtown.Â
Another unidentified passerby told a nearby police officer that he saw the armed suspect on the corner of Sanford St and Livingston Ave.
Neighborhood residents say they heard about five shots ring out from in front of the temple. Â An officer radioed in, “Shots were fired, neighboors here, not sure if he was hit. Â Stand by, everyone is OK.”
Moments later, an ambulance was called to the scene to transport the wounded man to the hospital, while police quickly closed off the stretch two blocks of Livingston Avenue to the public .
No official statement has been released by authorities on the shooting.  The corner of Livingston and Sanford remain  blocked off, with police teams investigating the crime scene.
The suspect’s baseball cap and a large bloodstain were visible at the corner.
