Hub City Ethics, Part 3: Ethics Board Declines to Investigate Case Involving NBPD Internal Affairs Process

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Noble Aaron El Shabazz is not one to give up on a fight.  For the past four years, he has challenged a system that he says is corrupt to the core: the New Brunswick city government.

After allegedly being racially profiled and harassed twice by New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) officers in 2010, Shabazz filed internal affairs (IA) complaints with the department.

Grammy-Winning Band “The Okee Dokee Brothers” Perform at Crossroads Theatre

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The children’s folk duo "The Okee Dokee Brothers" are set to perform at 1PM and 4PM on Sunday and will also play two performances for schools on Monday at 10AM and 12PM, at the Crossroads Theatre on Livingston Avenue.

In May of this year, Joe Mailander (guitar) and Justin Lansing (banjo) released their latest album, "Through the Woods: An Appalachian Adventure Album," which features songs written during their month-long hike on the Appalachian Trail.

Former Hub City Stomper Embarks On Global Mission of Recovery Through Music

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On September 17, punk rocker Sammy Kay played with his band at the Court Tavern on Church Street to kick off a global tour that will last almost 100 days, ending just before Christmas.

The tour will take him across the United States, through Canada, to Germany, Spain, England, France, as well as other countries.

It’s a big season for Sammy Kay—he also has two new records for sale. 

One is an LP called Fourth Street Singers, and the other is an EP called Second Chances.

Department of Public Works Offering Smartphone App to Remind Residents of Garbage and Recycling Days

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On September 26, the City of New Brunswick took one step further into the 21st century with the implementation of the first smartphone application to connect residents with their government in city history.

MyWaste, a free application that lets users check garbage and recycling pick-up days in their zone, and set reminders of upcoming collection days and events, is now available to New Brunswick residents.

The app has several other functions, connecting the public directly with the Department of Public Works.

Stage Left Restaurant Plans to Sell Rare Scotch For $1,800 Per Ounce

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A $38,000 bottle of Balvenie 50 single-malt scotch, one of only 131 in existence, will soon be on its way to the Hub City from Balvenie Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland.

The owners of Stage Left, a downtown restaurant on Livingston Avenue, are planning to open it as part of a swanky celebration on January 10.

The scotch comes from one of two European oak casks filled in 1963, and is one of just 15 bottles that are coming to America.

Geocaching Reveals Little Surprises in New Brunswick

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Geocaching is essentially a global scavenger hunt that is becoming increasingly popular in New Brunswick.

All one needs to participate is a pen and a device that uses the global positioning system (GPS).

Geocaching is a sport, which began in May 2000, when GPS systems became accurate enough to locate a container—or at least to bring an individual within several feet of it.
