Literacy New Jersey Merger Provides Improved Services to Adults Learning English

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Literary Programs of New Jersey and Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey, two organizations that served the Middlesex County area, have partnered with Literacy New Jersey in February, in a merger that combined seven different groups all with the same goal: improving literacy in their communities.

The newly formed conglomerate of those seven groups, Literacy New Jersey (LNJ), is based in Metuchen and offers services in New Brunswick.

New Hub City Writer’s Group Channels Literary Legends

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Creative writers, rejoice: a new writer’s group launched quietly at Hidden Grounds Café last May, a place for writers to develop their ideas, their talent, and their community.

Hub City Writers (HCW), founded by rising Rutgers senior Caitlyn Gilvary, meets weekly at the popular café on Easton Avenue, and involves a member reading what he or she has written since the previous weeks’ meeting, and then receiving critiques from their creative peers.

Public Library Kicks Off Sixteenth Annual Summer Reading Program

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On Saturday, June 21, the New Brunswick Free Public Library (NBFPL) kicked off its sixteenth annual Summer Reading Program for kids and teens, and its second annual program for adults.

From 1-3pm, people of all ages came to the basement to sign up for the programs, with a turnout that was “at least as good as last year and probably much better,” according to Children’s Librarian Tamara Richman.

19-Year-Old Rutgers Student Accidentally Elected to County Republican Committee

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers University Junior Asad Asif was inaugurated earlier this month as a member of the Middlesex County Republican Committee, a position to which he was unanimously elected with one vote, his own.

Asif, age 19, did not go into the June 3 primary election with any expectation of taking office three days later, nor did he vote for himself for selfish reasons.
