New Brunswick Fire Director Pleads Guilty to Careless Driving in Crash That Hurt Three Kids

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The city's Fire Director Robert Rawls pleaded guilty today to careless driving in connection with a crash that injured three New Brunswick children on May 6.

The courtroom at South Brunswick's Municipal Building played host to the case, due to a perceived conflict of interest due to Rawls role in Mayor James Cahill's cabinet.  Friends and family of the victims, as well as several television news cameras were on hand for the case.

County Government Hosts Annual Free Paper Shredding Event at NBHS

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On July 11, Middlesex County residents were permitted to bring five file boxes or 100 pounds of paper each to be shredded at the New Brunswick High School. 

The unique event, held in the morning, served as an opportunity for those with bank statements, receipts and even junk mail, to dispose of them securely.

The Middlesex County Solid Waste Management is holding paper shreddings in 20 municipalities this summer.

Adult Learning Center Awards 214 High School Degrees

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The New Brunswick Public School Adult Learning Center awarded 214 graduates with diplomas at their graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 25.

The ceremony was held at New Brunswick High School and marked the 34th year that ALC has worked to help adults in the city achieve their education goals.

Among the students, 30 enrolled in the C.A.R.E.S. High School Program (Creating Alternative Routes to Educational Success), which awarded them high school diplomas.

Rutgers REaCH Helps New Brunswick Students Despite Challenges

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—When a smart, quiet senior at New Brunswick Health Sciences Technology High School approached Alecia Bardachino to talk about college decisions, Bardachino was surprised because the girl had always been shy.

The brilliant senior had just been accepted to the Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences, a liberal arts program, but wanted to pursue her interest in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.

The student felt that there was no one close to her who could give advice.

Rutgers Doubles Down on TEDx Programming

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers students who find their 80-minute classes too long will be able to attend a different kind of lecture this year: one that spans eighteen minutes and addresses a single topic of concern to the modern world.

Based on the "TED talk" model, the short presentations are named for the Technology, Education, and Design conference started in 1984.

Rutgers Student Crowned Miss New Jersey 2014

OCEAN CITY, NJ—With a platform of "Empowering Today's Youth Through Arts Education" and a talent of dance, Cierra J. Kaler-Jones won the 2014 Miss New Jersey competition on Saturday, June 14.

She was officially crowned at Ocean City Music Pier after a week-long competition.

Lawyer Connected to Kelso and Kaplan Sends Inspector Accused of Racial Slur Back to Work

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Officials announced on May 21 that a housing inspector suspended for allegedly using a racial slur to describe Assistant City Attorney Charly Gayden will be returning to work on June 5.

Ronald Bellafronte, suspended for three months without pay since March 5, will resume his employment with the city following a decision by the city's hearing officer, Patrick W. Foley
