Cancer Research Advocates Stopped Trump’s Cuts to Biomedical Research

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—President Donald Trump’s original budget proposal would reduce the National Institute of Health’s annual funding by $7 billion, a move that could negatively affect New Brunswick's major industry.

That was the message that U.S. Senator Robert Menendez hoped to send on April 12 when he visited the Rutgers Cancer Institute in New Brunswick, discussed the effect the budget would have on American citizens.

JFK Medical Center Could Join Forces With RWJBarnabas by Year’s End

EDISON, NJ—John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, better known as JFK Hospital, could be under new ownership as early as the end of 2016.

Due to competition from recent New Jersey hospital mergers and changes in healthcare related to the passage Affordable Care Act, industry insiders seem to think a merger or buyout is inevitably in the hospital's future.

JFK is one of only a dozen independent hospitals in New Jersey, which has seen a flurry of hospital mergers in recent years.

Author Discusses Women in the Works and Life of J.R.R. Tolkien

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On July 27, Janet Brennan Croft, co-editor of "Perilous and Fair: Women in the Works and Life of J.R.R. Tolkien," will be the featured author in Rutgers University's "AuthorTalks" series.

The event will be held at the Alexander Library, located at 169 College Avenue, on the Rutgers New Brunswick campus at 4:00pm.

Brennan Croft is considered an expert on fantasy authors, including J. R. R. Tolkien, the high fantasy author of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.

McCourty Twins Tackle Sickle Cell at Local Blood Drive

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Twin brothers Devin and Jason McCourty, current NFL football stars who once played for Rutgers, hosted a blood drive at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) on February 20.

The “Tackle Sickle Cell” blood drive was organized in collaboration with the twins and the Embrace Kids Foundation, a non-profit that helps children with cancer and blood disorders.

Early Morning Fire Near Lord Stirling Elementary School

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—At around 8 a.m. on January 8, an apartment fire broke out at 114 Redmond Street, near the intersection with Throop Avenue.

The home, that has an upstairs and downstairs apartment, is directly across the street from Lord Stirling Elementary school.

School staff and a crossing guard directed children and parents to the side of the school opposite the home.

The fire started at the rear of the first floor, which was vacant at the time. The second floor tenants self-evacuated and there were no reported injuries. .

Urban Fiction Writer Takerra Allen is Straight Out of Brunswick

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Author Takerra Allen, raised in New Brunswick, has written ten books, including the 2010 African American Literary Award nominated hit novel, "Heaven's Hell."

The daughter of former Black Panther William Garland and half-sister to the renowned rapper Tupac Shakur, Takerra has been featured in several publications and has a huge fan-following.

Takerra is proud to acknowledge that her New Brunswick roots helped lay the foundation for her career as an urban fiction writer.
