Alleged Robbers Captured in Texas, Charged With Crime Spree Targeting Indian-Americans in Middlesex County

NEW BRUNSWICK,NJ—Authorities say that a group of Texas-based robbers responsible for the string of home invasions against Asian-Indian families in Middlesex County made it all the way back to Houston, Texas before being captured by police last week.

The alleged robbers, identified as Chaka Castro, 39, Juan Olaya, 34, Octavius Scott, 22, and Johnisha Williams, 19, will be extradited to New Jersey where they will each be held on $1.25 million bail.

On Verge of Graduation, Rutgers Student From Califon Passes Away

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Michael J. Murray, a Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences student, passed away this weekend, according to Richard L. Edwards, Chancellor of the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus.

"The Rutgers community is saddened by this tragic news, and we offer our thoughts and prayers to Michael’s family and to all his friends," Edwards states in the email.

Michael Murray, a resident of Califon Borough in Hunterdon County, transferred to Rutgers in 2013 from the County College of Morris.

Robber Strikes Rutgers Student in Face and Gets Away, Leading to Fifteenth Crime Alert of Semester

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A Rutgers student was robbed of his wallet and struck in the face after being approached by two men on Central Avenue at approximately 7:10pm on December 2, according to a university crime alert.

The alert was not sent to Rutgers community members until more than 22 hours after the crime occurred.

It marks the fifteenth crime alert issued this semester, including messages sent regarding burglaries, robberies, assaults, and sexual crimes like groping.

New Brunswick Protests in Response to Staten Island Grand Jury Decision Not to Indict NYPD Officer

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—For the second time in as many weeks, the New Brunswick and Rutgers community will protest in response to a grand jury’s decision not to indict a police officer for the killing of an unarmed citizen.

New York resident Eric Garner was choked to death by NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo, in a disturbing incident that was caught on tape this summer and sparked massive protests.

Garner's crime?  Selling loose cigarettes on a street corner in Staten Island.

Detectives Say Missing Girl From Franklin May Be in New Brunswick

FRANKLIN, NJ—Nearly a month after 17-year-old-Franklin resident Myriam Rodriguez went missing, the Franklin Township Police Department is now asking for the public’s help in finding her.

A Nixle alert was released by the Township at 2:18pm on December 3, along with a press release from the Franklin Township Police Department.

"An investigation conducted by detectives indicates that Myriam ran away and is possibly in the New Brunswick area," read the statements.

Prosecutor Quickly Clears NBPD in Mysterious Death of 35-Year-Old Man From Ward Street

NEW BRUNSWICK—A 35-year-old man from Ward Street died  on November 21 after being physically restrained by his family and city police officers, while going through what authorities described as “emotional distress.”

Just over seventeen hours after Saiseram Somwar's death, the office of Middlesex Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey released a statement saying their investigation "determined police acted properly during their response to the family emergency."

Famous Visual Artist Visits Rutgers For Lecture on Women, Art, and Technology

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Internationally-known visual artist Grimanesa Amorós hosted a lecture and silent auction at Mabel Smith Douglass Library at Rutgers, sponsored by The Institute for Women In Art (IWA).

“It is a great honor to have the opportunity to come and share the work that I do and I’m looking forward to the lecture,” Amorós tells New Brunswick Today.
