RadioShack Files For Bankruptcy, Announces Swift Closure of 50 NJ Stores

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–RadioShack Corporation filed for bankruptcy on February 5, and disclosed that it had reached an agreement to sell as many as 2,400 of its 4,000 U.S. company-owned stores to hedge fund Standard General L.P.

The electronics retailer said it will close the remaining stores it owns, beginning with New Brunswick's George Street location, and 49 others in New Jersey.

Rite Aid Buys Leading Independent Pharmacy Benefit Manager For $2 Billion

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Rite Aid Corporation and Envision Pharmaceutical Services announced on February 11 that Rite Aid will acquire EnvisionRx, a portfolio company of private investment firm TPG, for about $2 billion, according to a Rite Aid news release.

Envision, a national full-service pharmacy benefit manager, offers pharmacy and mail-order services, in addition to traditional options through its EnvisionRx and MedTrak networks.

Rite Aid’s stock was up by as much as 12% on February 11, in reportedly heavy trading of its shares.

RWJ Reportedly in Talks with Barnabas Health About Possible Merger

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Barnabas Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Health System, two of New Jersey's largest hospital networks, are exploring a partnership that would create the largest network in the state, according to NJ.com.

Both CEO’s confirmed the possibility of a merger to a reporter, but declined to elaborate on the details of the collaboration due to “a confidentiality agreement that prevents them from revealing the status or the details of their discussions at this time,” according to the report.

J&J Announces Emergence of Ebola Vaccine Development Cooperative

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Johnson & Johnson (J&J) on January 16 announced it is forming a cooperative with leading global research institutions and non-government organizations to work together to speed up development of its Ebola vaccine regimen.   

The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), Europe's largest public-private partnership will provide funding grants totaling more than 100 million euros ($115 million) from the Ebola+ program to support the development, manufacturing and patient education for the vaccine regimen.

Former FDA Commissioner Might Testify Against J&J in Risperdal Case

PHILADELPHIA, PA–In a lawsuit against Hub City drugmaker Johnson & Johnson (J&J), former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner David Kessler may testify against the company, Philly.com’s David Sell reports.

Kessler served as FDA Commissioner from 1990 through 1997, under Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

The ongoing trial, related to the antipsychotic drug Risperdal, made by J&J's Janssen Pharmaceuticals division, is being heard in Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

Edison BOE Schedules Referendum on Borrowing $18.6 Million to Rebuild School Destroyed in Fire

EDISON, NJ—The Edison Township Board of Education is expected to vote tonight to hold a special election to be held on March 10,  for consideration of a bond proposal to fund the replacement of James Monroe Elementary School, which was destroyed by fire early last year.

The school board meeting is in South Edison at the Washington Elementary School at 7 pm (on January 28), and is sure to move this unique referendum forward.
