Contamination Concerns Cause Broad Bottled Water Recall

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Several popular chain stores in New Jersey were forced to recall their house-label brands of bottled water due to possible E. Coli contamination.

Niagara Bottling, a national private-label  spring water service, issued a voluntary recall on June 22, asking the public to either boil or not use products manufactured two of its Pennsylvania plants:  Hamburg and Allentown.

Water bottled there on June 10 through June 18 may be tainted and is unsafe to drink.

Chipotle Eliminates Genetically Modified Foods at All Locations

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Chipotle Mexican Grill announced in late April that the nearly 50 ingredients used in all of its U.S. restaurants are now free of genetically modified organisms (GMO's).

The company said its tortillas are the only food items on its menu that include any artificial additives.  But it is now actively developing new recipes for its tortillas, according to a news release.

New Brunswick's first and only Chipotle opened in 2009 at the intersection of George and Church Streets.

Old Bridge Walmart Closes For 10 Hours Due to Leaking Car Batteries

OLD BRIDGE, NJ–The newer of the two Walmarts in Old Bridge closed for at least 10 hours over the weekend of May 16-17 due to nine car batteries that were apparently damaged after falling off a shelf in the automotive department.

“There was a battery leak at which point the fire department was called. They recommended that we evacuate the store while our hazardous waste team came in for clean-up, which we did,” Aaron Mullins, a Walmart Spokesperson, told New Brunswick Today.

J&J Biochemist Testifies Company Never Gave FDA Risperdal Safety Analysis It Knew About For Years

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–In two lawsuits alleging that Johnson & Johnson’s antipsychotic drug Risperdal caused boys to grow female breasts, a biochemist for the company testified that the Food Drug Administration (FDA) was never given an internal analysis showing a link between the two.

Ivo Caers, a VP of Neuroscience Development at Janseen Research & Development, has been employed with J&J for the past 36 years.

Costco Sues J&J Over Alleged Contact Lens Price Fixing

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Costco Wholesale Corporation is suing city-based Johnson & Johnson (J&J) because the pharmacuetical giant is trying to set minimum resale prices for its Acuvue brand contact lenses in order to prevent competition, according to a complaint filed in a federal court in March.

J&J disclosed Costco’s complaint in its quarterly report to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on May 2.

Annual Street Fair and 5k Run Held in Highland Park

HIGHLAND PARK, NJ—A 5k race now in its seventh annual year will kick-off a day of family fun on Sunday morning, May 3, starting behind Highland Park High School.

Now in his second year as race director, local runner and certified running coach Neil Hume, a Highland Park resident, told New Brunswick Today about a few changes the "Run in the Park 5k" race committee hopes will be good for the runners and their families.
