Bridgestone and Pep Boys Agree on Merger

EDISON, NJ–Pep Boys currently has 30 “Supercenters” and twelve “Service & Tire Centers” in the Garden State but recently agreed to be acquired for $863 million by tire maker Bridgestone.

Bridgestone operates several stores of its own in NJ, including: 43 Firestone “Complete Auto Care” shops and five Mr. Tire “Auto Parts Centers.”

But Bridgestone recently demonstrated that it wants even more retail stores throughout the U.S. and NJ.

Johnson & Johnson Back in Court Over Secretive 2009 Recall of Motrin

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–In the spring of 2009, "secret shoppers" across the United States were discreetly buying up thousands of bottles of Motrin from the shelves of retail stores.

New Brunswick's own Johnson & Johnson had, through a private contractor, given them instructions to buyback defective Motrin pills from 5,000 U.S. stores, but not reveal there was an effort to recall the pills.

Almost 10,000 Runners Participate in 13th Annual Big Chill 5k

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The 13th Annual Big Chill, a charity 5k run/walk hosted by Rutgers Recreation, continues to be one of the most popular events of its kind in the state.

The December 5 race had 9,600 runners registered in total, an 8% increase over last year's race, according to data from CompuScore, a race scoring and timing outfit.

The race is unique. There is no entry fee, but participants are asked to bring a new unwrapped toy to be given as holiday gifts to local children.

Asian-American Market to Replace Closed Edison Pathmark

EDISON, NJ—A supermarket operator doing business as “99 Ranch Market” is slated to open in Edison as soon as next fall, after remodeling the recently-closed Pathmark on Route 1 into an Asian-American grocery store, according to a legal filing in the A&P bankruptcy reorganization case.

The California-based company, Tawa Inc., was declared the successful bidder at the A&P bankruptcy auction on October 2, agreeing to purchase the lease, which dates back to 1986, and its “related assets” for $3.7 million.

Elijah’s Promise Takes Annual Turkey Trot Event to Piscataway, Adding a 5K Run to The Festivities

PISCATAWAY, NJ—Just minutes before starting off nearly 200 runners and 100 walkers ready for a 5K Turkey Trot/1-Mile Fun Walk on November 21, the race director told them the organization they were supporting had opened its Hub City soup kitchen a record 31 times last year as an overnight shelter for people in need.

Jim Zullo is the head of Elijah’s Promise, the city-based food justice organization that has operated in New Brunswick since 1989. One of many services they provide is shelter on nights when the temperature turns frigid or snow falls.

Taco Bell Transitioning to Cage-Free Eggs by End of 2016

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–The Taco Bell on Somerset Street, along with all 6,000 U.S. restaurants in the quick-service chain, will serve only "cage-free" eggs by the end of 2016.

Taco Bell will make the switch from regular eggs, which are produced less humanely by caged hens, ahead of any other national chain that serves breakfast, according to a November 16 Taco Bell press release.

Rutgers Mini-MBA Program to Explore Impact Of ‘The Internet Of Things’ on Our Supply Chain

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Rutgers Business School Executive Education announced the launch of a $4,995 certificate program slated to explore the impact of the "Internet of Things (IoT)" on the future of supply chain strategy in the business world.

The IoT is the concept of the Internet as a network with the potential to connect everyday objects and allow them to send and receive data.

A press release announcing the new program featured a video of a recently retired Johnson & Johnson (J&J) executive who will teach in the program.
