IRS Strips Tax-Exempt Status From Brunswick-Based Police Agency

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The state's quasi-public law enforcement agency meant to target animal abuse has lost its tax-exempt non-profit status, also known as "501(c)(3)" status, after failing to file tax returns for three straight years.

The New Jersey Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJ-SPCA) is the second-oldest such organization in the United States, but it has recently come under fire for its lack of transparency and its handling of several animal cruelty scandals in the area.

Wawa Defends Against Employee Discrimination Lawsuit

TRENTON, NJ–Wawa Inc. argued in New Jersey federal court on February 10 that a former fuel associate was terminated for failing to record cash sales, not because he complained a superior told him to speak in English, according to a report from Law360.com. 

Pennsylvania-based Wawa, which operates about 245 conveniences stores in the Garden State and sells fuel at more than 130 sites, also said its one-time employee's discrimination suit should be dismissed, according to the report.

Perth Amboy PD Gets Mine-Resistant Military Vehicle From Feds

PERTH AMBOY, NJ—Perth Amboy’s Police Department will soon be getting a Mine-resistant, Ambush-protected (MRAP) military vehicle from the federal government.

The original price for this vehicle was $65,000, but the PAPD only had to pay shipping costs, $6,500, through the controversial Federal 1033 Program, which gives municipal and county law enforcement access to military grade equipment such as aircrafts, weapons and vehicles.

Rutgers Hosts Art Exhibit on Immigrants “Living In The Shadows”

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers University is hosting an art exhibit titled "Living In The Shadows: Underground Immigrant Communities" on the Douglass campus.

The Center for Women in the Arts (CWAH) put together the exhibit, which examines the circumstances of irregular migration and the hidden lives of undocumented immigrants, inside the gallery at the Mabel Smith Douglass Library on Chapel Drive.

Driver Faces Charges After Allegedly Fleeing Crash That Killed Cyclist

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–A Matawan man was charged with causing the death of a bicyclist, according to a January 23 press release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office (MCPO). 

Francis Smith, age 56, was charged with aggravated manslaughter, death by auto, and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving fatal injuries, according to the release.

The fatal crash occurred six days before the announcement, and five days after 57-year-old South Amboy resident William Nash succumbed to his head injuries.

Shakeup Could Bring Panera Bread to Rutgers Student Centers

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Some members of the Rutgers community were a bit distraught at the beginning of the new semester when they discovered that, after more than two decades on College Avenue, the Au Bon Pain had closed for good.

Luckily for fans of coffee and pastries, the very similar Panera Bread is said to be taking the place of ABP in the near future, according to a January 16 article in the Daily Targum.
