NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On March 4, nearly a year after Brian Clements ran over a 52-year-old pedestrian while driving drunk, the Manalapan motorist was sentenced to serve up to 13 years in a New Jersey state prison.

Clements pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and fleeing the scene of a fatality, after striking and killing Silvia Reyes-Ramos, a city resident and mother of four children.

At the time of her accident, her only son was nine years old and her daughters were age 36, 29, and 18.

At approximately 7:06 p.m. on March 30 of last year, Clements stuck Reyes-Ramos, while she was crossing Somerset Street at the intersection with Alexander Street, before fleeing the scene according to investigators.

Ms. Reyes-Ramos was taken to nearby Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, also on Somerset Street, where she was pronounced dead the following day.

Clements surrendered to police on April 11 after New Brunswick police officer Mark Smith and Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Investigator Scott Crocco of the traced his 2012 Ford Edge and linked him to the accident.

Investigators determined that Clements was intoxicated and driving at a high rate of speed when his vehicle struck the woman as she was on her way to church.

He pleaded guilty on December 4, under an agreement reached with Middlesex County Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Kuberiet.

Clements was sentenced to 8 years for vehicular homicide, and an additional 5 years to be served consecutively for fleeing the scene.

In addition, Clements must serve 85 percent of his term before being eligible for parole.  After being released from custody, he will be placed on parole supervision for three years.

Superior Court Judge Bradley Ferencz presided over the sentencing in a hearing at the Middlesex County Courthouse in New Brunswick.
