Sentencing Postponed For Thief Who Served as Treasurer of County Utilities Authority

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Margaret Brennan was scheduled to be sentenced on February 2 after admitting to stealing $57,000 towards the end of her 29-year tenure at the Middlesex County Utilities Authority (MCUA), where she served as Treasurer and Comptroller.

The admission, and a plea deal for a 364-day sentence in county jail came in December.  But Brennan, who is 68 years old and worked for the authority for 28 years, still has not spent a night in jail.

Soup Kitchen Helps Count Homeless Population in Middlesex County

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Hundreds of homeless people visited Elijah's Promise soup kitchen on January 28 to be counted in the county's 2015 Point in Time Survey, an annual measurement of the homeless population in Middlesex County.

Last year, just over 1,400 homeless were counted at three locations in the county, the vast majority of them at the New Brunswick soup kitchen, located on Neilsen Street.

J&J Announces Emergence of Ebola Vaccine Development Cooperative

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Johnson & Johnson (J&J) on January 16 announced it is forming a cooperative with leading global research institutions and non-government organizations to work together to speed up development of its Ebola vaccine regimen.   

The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), Europe's largest public-private partnership will provide funding grants totaling more than 100 million euros ($115 million) from the Ebola+ program to support the development, manufacturing and patient education for the vaccine regimen.

Knifepoint Robbery on Harvey Street Follows Similar Incident 20 Minutes Earlier on Townsend Street

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–City police are investigating at least one incident on January 31 where a man was robbed at knifepoint by three other men on Harvey Street in the Fifth Ward, according to a Rutgers University crime alert.

But what the crime alert does not mention is that a similar incident was reported just twenty minutes earlier one block away, according to police radio transmissions.
