PISCATAWAY, NJ—In a ceremony that was likely extra special for the thousands of mothers who watched their children graduate on Mother’s Day, Rutgers extended degrees to a record 13,465 students.
For the second straight year, the University held a large ceremony at Rutgers Stadium, as well as dozens of smaller departmental ceremonies where the names of graduates were actually read aloud.
During the football stadium ceremony, the Rutgers Board of Governors surprised outgoing President Richard McCormick with a Rutgers degree of his own.
“At last, a Rutgers degree,” he said proudly as he held back tears of joy.
McCormick served as President for nearly 10 years. Greg Brown, the Chairman of the search committee that helped select his replacement was the keynote speaker at the ceremony.
