Senator Booker Speaks at Rutgers

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—New Jersey's newest US Senator Cory Booker spoke to a crowd of mostly Rutgers students on Tuesday February 18 in Hickman Hall on the Douglass campus.

The event was hosted by the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers

Senator Booker opened with a 30-minute speech, touching on his early days in politics as a Newark City Councilman, and public war of words with Conan O'Brien.

Rutgers Faculty Union Succeeds in Efforts to Improve Contracts For Adjunct Professors

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Around 900 Rutgers faculty members, mostly adjuncts, also known as "non-tenure track professors," are closing a tense bargaining session over pay increases and better job titles.

The American Association of University Professors-American Federation of Teachers (AAUP-AFT) attained several improvements for the non-tenure track professors in the latest agreement, which was recently approved by the union.

Affordable Housing for Domestic Abuse Survivors Coming to Historic Downtown Church

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Town Clock Community Development Corporation (CDC) is poised to build a housing community inside the First Reformed Church that will be a haven for domestic abuse survivors when it opens in the spring of 2015.

The church, which dates back to 1717, has a congregation of around 60 people but enough space for 600.  So, they have decided to restructure the sanctuary from one large room into ten affordable apartments, along with a multiuse worship and community space.

Medical School Merger Creates Financial Issues for Rutgers and Its Students

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On July 1, Rutgers finally absorbed the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, a financially troubled but academically respected medical school that started as a part of Rutgers.

Rutgers took over most parts of UMDNJ this summer.  Meanwhile, the UMDNJ School of Osteopathic Medicine was absorbed by Rowan University and Newark's University Hospital became a separate state-owned entity, no longer be affiliated with any university.
