Rutgers Requires Merchandise Manufacturers to Sign Worker Rights Accord, Cutting Ties with Some

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—In response to the harsh treatment in the sweatshops of Bangladesh, as well as the efforts of a collaboration of local student organizations, Rutgers University has cut ties with two clothing manufacturers.

Business relationships with OC Sports/Outdoor Cap and VF Corporation, which owns the Jansport line of apparell, were ended earlier this month.

Source: Rutgers Telefund Managers Laid Off as Out-of-State Company Takes Over

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Sources say that staff layoffs, at least for managers, are part of a deal to outsource the management of the Rutgers University Telefund, as an outside company prepares to take over July 1.

The operation will still remain at 303 George Street in downtown New Brunswick, and officials maintain it "will continue to employ approximately 100 students each semester."

New Transfer to Rutgers Kicked Off Football Team For Alleged Assault in Minnesota

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—As Rutgers University enters the NCAA Big 10 Conference, a series of controversies has beset the athletics department, ranging from financial issues to outright abuse of student players.

Most recently, however, a new tragedy has occurred involving Philip Nelson, a recent Rutgers Football pick up, who transferred from the University of Minnesota during this offseason.

On May 14, Nelson, 20, was dismissed from the Rutgers Football team in lieu of an assault charge in his hometown of Mankato, MN.

North Brunswick Man Sentenced to 6 Years For Manslaughter in Killing of Oswaldo Lozada

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Eduardo H. Escobar-Landaverde has worked out a plea deal with the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office after admitting to the killing a rival gang member in the Hub City.

The incident occurred on January 9, 2012, in the vicinity of Somerset and Louis Streets in New Brunswick.  Escobar-Landaverde fatally shot Oswaldo Lozada, 21, prosecutors say.

Escobar-Landaverde, a member of the 18th Street gang reportedly said that he carried a weapon for the purpose of firing upon rival gang members.

TONIGHT: Benefit Concert for Victims of Typhoon Disaster

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On May 3, Christ Church in New Brunswick will be hosting an Aftermath Recovery Benefit Concert for survivors of the Typhoon Haiyan disaster that occurred in Southeast Asia in November 2013.

The Haiyan Typhoon is considered one of the worst natural disasters to have ever been recorded, responsible for over 6,000 mortalities and 27,000 injuries just in the Philippines alone.

Local Activists and Residents to Rally and March in Honor of Worker Memorial Day

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On Sunday, April 27, New Brunswick organization New Labor is co-sponsoring a march and rally with New Jersey Environment Council on Workers' Memorial Day.

Workers' Memorial Day is an annual international commemoration that remembers workers who have died or been injured while working.

The rally will begin at Lord Stirling Elementary School, located on 101 Redmond Street at 1 pm.
