Johnson & Johnson Ordered to Pay NJ Resident $15 Million

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–A Johnson & Johnson (J&J) unit on December 14 was ordered to pay $15 million to a woman implanted with its faulty transvaginal mesh product, nine years back.

Elizabeth Hrymoc, 71, had sued Somerville-based Ethicon, whose parent company is J&J, which has been located in Hub City since 1886.

The award approved by the jury included $4 million in compensatory damages for the plaintiff, $1 million for her husband, and $10 million in punitive damages.

Jersey Avenue Importer Recalls 6,200 Mattresses Due to Flammability

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–A city-based importer of mattresses and rugs, together with the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), has recalled about 6,200 mattresses due to a fire hazard.

Since the “Basic 6-inch and Basic 8-inch” mattresses made in China fail to meet the federal flammability standard for mattresses, Superior Importers, LLC, is providing a free mattress cover as a repair-remedy.

Johnson & Johnson Partners With World’s Largest Medical Center

HOUSTON, TX–On November 9, Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies (J&JMDC) officially opened the Center for Device Innovation at the Texas Medical Center (CDI@TMC).

A collaboration between the Houston-based medical center and Johnson & Johnson Innovation LLC, the new facility will “accelerate development of breakthrough medical devices technologies,” according to a news release.

It represents another significant American expansion for the corporate giant based in New Brunswick.

Recall Issued For Fit & Active Protein Meal Bars Sold at Aldi Stores

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Leclerc Foods, a PA-based distributor issued a recall on November 23 of a single lot of “Fit & Active Chocolatey Chip Protein Meal Bars” with a “best by” date of May 24, 2018.

The bars were shipped to and sold by Aldi supermarkets in New Jersey and 20 other states.

According to a news release, the recall “was initiated as a precautionary measure after a small piece of yellow plastic was [found] by a consumer in the product.

NJ Native Denise Reddy Hired as New Sky Blue FC Head Coach

PISCATAWAY, NJ–Sky Blue FC, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club that utilizes Rutgers University’s Yurcak Field for home matches, hired Denise Reddy as its new head coach, the team announced on November 15.

Reddy, a “Jersey Girl” who was an All-American in her college days at Rutgers, has years of coaching experience in the United States and Europe.

She began coaching in 2007 as head coach of Jersey Sky Blue, the W-League club that preceded Sky Blue FC as a pro club prior to NWSL’s launch.

Work Out World Rebrands, Changing Name of Its 11 Garden State Gyms

EDISON, NJ–Work Out World (WoW) has changed the name of the eleven fitness clubs it operates in New Jersey, capitalizing on the name of a foundation started by its owners.

A Google search for “Jersey Strong Foundation” leads one to JerseyStrong.com, a website pitching their gym business, which was recently renamed “Jersey Strong.”

Launched in 2007 as the "Work Out World Foundation," the nonprofit rebranded in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

Target Stores Raise Minimum Hourly Wage For Their Employees

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ–Big-box retailer Target Corporation is raising its minimum wage to $11 an hour, with plans to raise it to $15 by the end of 2020.

Target is reportedly competing to fill low-wage jobs as workers are in shorter supply amid a limited labor market.

Target, which employs about 323,000 people, said it will extend the new wage rate to current staff as well as “more than 100,000 hourly team members [it plans on] hiring for the holiday season.”
