RWJ Hosts Blood Drive Featuring Former Rutgers Football Stars

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Two twin brothers and NFL stars were among dozens of supporters in attendance for a February 15 blood drive to raise awareness of sickle-cell anemia at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Devin and Jason McCourty, who play for the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans respectively, encouraged people to come donate both their time and blood in an effort to help people affected with this disease.

Local New Brunswick Band Modern Chemistry Rocks Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ—Wavves, Echosmith, and local favorites Modern Chemistry performed at Rutgers University’s first annual spring kickoff event at the Livingston Student Center, sponsored by the Rutgers University Programming Association.

New Brunswick's own Modern Chemistry opened the Feb. 6 show with some post rock riffs and blaring vocals breathing energy into the crowd of eager fans. Although the student center was not sold out, just the band’s stage presence alone could have fooled veterans of the music scene.

City Officials Disagree Over Private-Sector Paid Sick Leave Policy

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Even though the state's two largest cities have adopted laws requiring paid sick leave for private sector employees, New Brunswick's city government is hesitant to follow suit.

"At this time the mayor is not in favor of doing that," said Russell Marchetta, a spokesman for Mayor James Cahill, at the November 6 City Council meeting.

Council President Rebecca Escobar had previously said she would be inclined to support a paid sick leave policy, but that the city did not have an official position.
