Saint Peter’s Hospital Hosts 25th Annual MLK Day Celebration

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–The Martin Luther King Holiday is about more than having a day off, said Reverend Dr. Harmut Kramer-Mills of the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick, the speaker at the 25th Annual Interfaith MLK Celebration at Saint Peter’s hospital.

“This is the first of our problems,” Harmut Kramer-Mills said.

“The fatal misunderstanding that Martin Luther King Day is just another day off.”

Community Gardeners Reap Fruits of Their Labor

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—As the summer draws to a close, families are harvesting the various crops grown at the nine community gardens throughout the city.

Each one part of the New Brunswick Community Garden Coalition, these gardens include a tremendous variety of produce, including many types of peppers, a variety of herbs and beans, lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers, and even melons. In addition, residents also grow flowers in the gardens.

New Brunswick School Board Invests $16 Million in Going Green

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The city school district is hoping a “green” energy savings project will save the district some “green” over the long term.

New Brunswick's Board of Education recently launched the $16 million project aimed at making many of the district's older schools more energy efficient.

The project, which began in June, will continue throughout the coming school year, with an anticipated completion date of September 2015.

New Brunswick High School Soccer Teams Gear Up For 2014 Season

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Shouts of “Be on your toes!” and “Quality over quantity!” could be heard from the soccer fields at New Brunswick High School on Saturday, August 16, as both the boys and girls soccer teams were working hard to prepare for the upcoming season.

The teams practiced ball control drills, quick touch passes to teammates, and making accurate crosses and finishing at the net. With new head coaches for both teams, the Zebras boys and girls soccer teams are looking to take some big steps forward this season.

Esperanza Residents Conduct First Neighborhood Litter Cleanup

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A group of about 20 residents gathered at Joyce Kilmer Park on Saturday to complete the first of several litter cleanups organized by the Esperanza Neighborhood Project.

The group, which included a number of children, filled up bags with trash and recycling, as well as swept up leaves and other debris from streets and sidewalks in and around Livingston Avenue.

“The idea is to make New Brunswick more clean,” said Flor Cruz, one of the block captains for the clean-up.

Community Farmers Market Educates About Healthy Habits

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—“How much of this?” 4-H assistant Laura Eppinger asked six year-old Olga, pointing to a jug of water.

“Three,” Olga said.

“How much of this?” Eppinger then asked, pointing to a bottle of distilled vinegar.

“One,” replied Olga.

The quick review was part of a free youth gardening program put on by the Rutgers 4-H at the New Brunswick Community Farmers Market on Jones Avenue on Saturday.
