Governor Appoints Woodbridge Councilman as Interim Middlesex County Schools Superintendent

WOODBRIDGE, NJ—A Township Councilman is now serving as the county's Superintendent of Schools on an interim basis after an appointment by Governor Phil Murphy.

Kyle Anderson, one of four Woodbridge Council members elected in Township-wide "at-large" elections, started the new $120,000 per year job as of May 29.

That salary comes in addition to his $12,000 annual pay for serving in the elected local office, which he has held since 2011.

New Asian-Inspired Restaurants Open Discreetly on George Street

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On May 14, a new food place opened in George Street.  Actually two new food places, but who's counting?

Eric Hang, 24, is the manager of Cambo box, which offers "Cambodian inspired sandwiches & rice bowls." Tim Wong, 30, is the manager of Poke Nagomi, which offers customers a chance to "create your own bowl."

Both establishments occupy the space at 342 George Street, previously home to Fiesta Mexican Restaurant.

Grant Enables Rutgers Project to Put Historic Newspapers Online

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—A project to put historical New Jersey local newspapers online recently received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

New Jersey Digital Newspaper Project (NJDNP), a collaboration between Rutgers, the New Jersey State Archives, and the New Jersey State Library, will use the $219,609 grant to digitize late 19th century and early 20th century records of three newspapers: Bridgeton Pioneer, Jersey City News, and Perth Amboy Evening News.

Center For Islamic Life at Rutgers Strives to Provide Service to Humanity

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–This summer, the Center for Islamic life of Rutgers University (CILRU) moved from its small office on 60 Sicard Street to a new location at 122 College Avenue in New Brunswick.

The organization is the product of an endless commitment from the Muslim alumni of Rutgers University.  Though the idea for CILRU started out in the late 1970’s as platform for the Muslim community to come together, it is only recently secured an on-campus location.

Federal and State Agencies Warn About Dangers of Fireworks

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Fireworks-related injuries sent nearly 13,000 people to emergency rooms across the country last year, according to the federal government.

“Celebrate safely when using fireworks,” cautioned the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) as Independence Day approached, citing holiday barbeques, cookouts and pool parties.

The CPSC said eight fireworks-related deaths were reported in 2017, with the victims ranging in age from four to 57.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – On the afternoon of Wednesday, June the 6th, on the steps of City Hall in the heart of New Brunswick, a longtime resident, and editor of this publication, Charlie Kratovil, formally announced his candidacy for the mayor of New Brunswick.

Kratovil, known to locals for his advocacy against corruption in the city as well as watchdog reporting on government affairs, is challenging incumbent Mayor James Cahill who is running for re-election to the 8th term in office.
