NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—It appears more and more likely each day that State Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Metuchen) will be the Democrat party's nominee to run against incumbent Gov. Chris Christie.

And Buono has chosen New Brunswick High School as the location for her to formally kick off her gubernatorial campaign, which has been officially underway since December and in the works for years.

The event will be held at noon on Saturday February 2 in the auditorium of the school.  Buono's campaign is accepting RSVP's on their website.

"This is a critical time for our state.," she wrote in an invitation emailed to supporters.

"Under Governor Christie, New Jersey’s unemployment rate is the fourth-worst in the nation and our property taxes are the highest. Middle and working class New Jerseyans are being left behind. We need a new way forward."

"As Governor, I’ll fight every day to put New Jerseyans back to work, improve our schools and make higher education more affordable for our children," she promised.

Buono is, however, not the only Democrat to have announced her candidacy.  William Araujo, a Planning Board member in Edison Township, has also said he will seek the nomination.

In December, Newark Mayor Cory Booker announced he would not be seeking the nomination.  On Friday, Buono's fellow State Senator and former Governor Richard Codey also said he would not seek the office in 2013.

The primary election to determine the Democrat and Republican candidates is scheduled for June 4 and the winners will face each other, along with any independent candidates, on November 5.
