NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) is investigating an aggravated assault with a sharp object, according to a Rutgers University crime alert.

The incident took place early on Sunday, October 4 at approximately 1:53 A.M. behind 18 College Avenue, the home of Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp), a fraternity that lost recognition from its national chapter and Rutgers University.

According to the NBPD, the victim, who is affiliated with Rutgers University, reported that he and his friends engaged in a physical altercation with another group who were also in the area.

During the encounter, the victim was assaulted with a sharp object and received a non-life threatening injury, which needed to be treated at a hospital.

The NBPD is actively investigating this incident and asks that anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time, contact the NBPD Detective Bureau at 732-745-5217.

The police said that one of the perpetrators was described as a white male, between the ages of 24 and 26 years-old with a beard and a ponytail pulled back into a bun, and wearing a “varsity” style jacket.

It is at least the second time someone has been cut near there in four months.

As  New Brunswick Today reported, on July 18, a man was cut in a fight near the SigEp house, but allegedly did not cooperate with authorities.

The victim in that assault was not affiliated with the school and suffered an injury to his hand after “he and his friends engaged in a physical altercation with a group of other individuals who were also in the area.”

Before it was de-recognized, the Rutgers chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon leased the home at 18 College Avenue residence from Zeta Psi, another fraternity that lost its official status in recent years.

The house sits on prime real estate, in the shadow of the city’s tallest building, and surrounded by Rutgers University’s historic campus in the Sixth Ward.
