NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Police are investigating an apparent shooting at a notorious corner in the Second Ward that injured two men in the early morning hours of July 4.
Sources in the neighborhood told New Brunswick Today the shooting was a perpetrated by a local drug dealer who recklessly shot up the corner in a beef over a few dozen doses of heroin.
Police said their investigation is still active in response to a request for information filed under the state’s Open Public Records Act (OPRA).
Captain JT Miller of the New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) responded on July 8:
On July 4, 2019 at approximately 2:30am New Brunswick police officers responded to the area of Delevan St. and Throop Avenue to investigate a possible shooting. The preliminary investigation found two victims both with non-life threatening gun shot wounds. Both victims are adult males, one from Edison, NJ and the second from New Brunswick, NJ. This investigation is ongoing.
The corner of Throop and Delavan (sometimes spelled Delevan) has been a well-known hotspot for gun violence in recent years, as New Brunswick Today’s Carlos Ramirez reported in 2017.
New Brunswick has already seen two murders this year, though neither involved guns. Police did not immediately respond to questions about statistics for nonfatal shootings in the city so far this year.
