Police Director Gets Five More Years on Powerful Parking Board

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Police Director Anthony "Tony" Caputo is now set to sit on the board that runs the city's powerful Parking Authority through 2023.

At Mayor James Cahill's request, the City Council consented to the five-year appointment in his absence.

Caputo is perhaps the city's most elusive public official, the only department head in Cahill's cabinet that consistently does not attend the Council's meetings.

As County Piles Garbage Higher, More Residents Say Middlesex Stinks

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ—Residents packed the Township Council Chambers on the evening of January 16 for a presentation and public meeting in response to concerns about odors emanating from the Middlesex County Landfill.

The landfill, located in East Brunswick near the border with New Brunswick, is operated by the Middlesex County Utilities Authority (MCUA).  But the smells it generates have found their way to other towns, including Highland Park, South River, and Sayreville.

Warehouse School Will Soon Be Home to P-TECH Pilot Program

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Starting this fall, several dozen New Brunswick students will comprise the very first class of a special new school that will open inside a rented warehouse on Van Dyke Avenue.

It's part of a new initiative revealed by Governor Phil Murphy on November 27, which aims to prepare students in three New Jersey cities for what he referred to as “new collar jobs.”

Owing $500K in Rent, Downtown Superfresh Reduces Floor Space

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Nearly a year after changing its name to Superfresh, the 49,000 square foot market inside the city's “Wellness Plaza” on Kirkpatrick Street has shrunk in size.

The store is privately owned and operated, but rents the entire space from New Brunswick Parking Authority (NBPA). Over the past fourteen months, the owners have fallen behind in rent by more than $500,000, owed to NBPA.
