NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–A city-based importer of mattresses and rugs, together with the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), has recalled about 6,200 mattresses due to a fire hazard.

Since the “Basic 6-inch and Basic 8-inch” mattresses made in China fail to meet the federal flammability standard for mattresses, Superior Importers, LLC, is providing a free mattress cover as a repair-remedy.

But consumers must provide the company, located at 502 Jersey Avenue, with a picture of their mattress, receipt showing the purchase date, and mattress label which indicates the date of manufacture.

“Recalled mattresses are ivory with tan and gray. ‘Made For: Superior Importers company, 502 Jersey Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ 08901’ is printed on a white tag located on the top side near the foot of the mattress,” said the CPSC in a press release.

The manufacturer is ABEST Technology Co., Ltd., of China, according to the CPSC.

“We understand your concern regarding the recall notice you received,” said the company’s President and CEO Aamir Shakir.

“Rest assured this mattress is not flammable and can still be used. It just does not contain enough inflammable material. All you will require (is) a mattress cover very similar to a waterproof cover that we’ll send you free of charge.”

Shakir added that the recall is voluntary and it is not necessary to stop using the twin, full, queen, or king-sized mattresses. The company also indicated it would do its “best to research” individual “case(s)” and then follow up with consumers in a timely manner.

No injuries or incidents have been reported by the CPSC or the importer. The matresses were sold by Amazon.com between May 2016 to May 2017, for between $50 to $150.

Superior Importers can be reached toll-free at 833-502-2500 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
