FRANKLIN, NJ–A 71-year-old New Brunswick resident named Patrick McDonald was struck by a car on July 27 on Easton Avenue in the Somerset section of Franklin Township.

McDonald’s life, according to reports, is partly owed to retired nurse Trish Weisenstein and an unidentified emergency medical technician who acted quick on the scene.

Weisenstein, a retired nurse from Freehold, saw the EMT helping the accident victim at about 10:36 am and opted not to remain a bystander, and instead to help adminster CPR until more help arrived at the scene, located just ten blocks from the border with New Brunswick.

“The initial investigation revealed that a 2016 Mazda CX5, operated by Unab Javed…was traveling eastbound on Castleton [Ave.] prior to stopping at the intersection so she could turn right onto Easton Avenue,” read a statement released by Franklin Police Lt. Philip Rizzo.

“[Javed] proceeded when traffic allowed but did not see the 71-year-old [man] crossing the roadway and struck him.”

When police arrived on the scene, McDonald was lying unresponsive on the road. Weisenstein described him as having no pulse, appearing blue in color and having sustained a head injury.

The roadway was shut down and following the incident, McDonald was rushed to a local hospital and treated for a serious but non-life threatening injury. The Landing Lane resident’s condition was later stablized and he continued to receive treatment.

Rizzo said that Javed, a 27 year-old woman from Somerset, was later issued summonses for careless driving.

“She is scheduled to appear in the Franklin Township Municipal Court in the near future,” Rizzo said, noting that drugs or alcohol did not play a part in the incident.
