Alberto Rivas Takes Over Key Role as County Assignment Judge

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On July 1, Alberto Rivas took over one of the judiciary's most powerful positions, after the New Jersey Supreme Court made him Middlesex County's Assignment Judge.

Rivas replaces Travis Francis, who retired from the bench after 10 years as Assignment Judge and more than 25 years in the Middlesex Vicinage.

“I am humbled and honored at the confidence the Chief has expressed in me,” Judge Rivas said. “I look forward to working with our talented group of jurists and staff.”

Masked Man Joins ICE and NBPD in Big Cocaine Bust on Redmond Street

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—It didn't take long for Immigrations and Cutoms Enforcement (ICE) and the New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) to find a way to work together.

Just four months after a policy was put in place limiting NBPD's co-operation with ICE agents on immigration matters, at least two local cops were spotted at the scene of a federal cocaine bust that brought a slew of agents from ICE's Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) to the city.

Wells Fargo Enterprise Sued for Overbilling Merchants

NEW YORK, NY–A Wells Fargo Bank partner that provides credit card processing services to merchants nationwide has been served with a lawsuit over the use of misleading sales tactics and overbilling for services, according to Reuters News Service.

The commercial enterprise, Wells Fargo Merchant Services, promised merchants it would offer transparent pricing, but instead charged unauthorized fees disguised with deceptive language in monthly statements, according to the report outlining the pending class action.

Police: Man Who Waved Weapon in Robeson Village Arrested

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—While most residents were taking in the festivities during the 4th of July, residents of one Fourth Ward neighborhood experienced a "large disturbance," according to police.

Allegedly, a man was waving around a weapon that looked like a handgun—but may have turned out to be an imitation firearm—on the grounds of the New Brunswick Housing Authority's Scwartz-Robeson public housing complex.

Roosevelt Park in Edison Hosts Performances of Mary Poppins

EDISON, NJ—From August 3 through August 12, the Steven J. Capestro Amphitheater is presenting live performances of the classic Walt Disney musical "Mary Poppins."

The first night had to be cancelled due to thunderstorms, but opening night finally came on Thursday, August 3.

This 1964 Disney musical, based on the writings of PL Travers tells the story of Mary Poppins, the “Practically perfect in every way” nanny, who manages to bring the troubled Banx family together in ways no one could have imagined.

Councilman Arrested with Cocaine After Crashing Into Parked Car

 JAMESBURG, NJ—A 49-year old Jamesburg Borough Councilman is facing possession of cocaine charges, and several traffic violations, after crashing into a parked vehicle on July 7. 

Thomas Busco, who is also a member of the Borough Council's Police Committee, was “unresponsive” as he rear-ended a legally parked Hyundai Genesis on Buckelew Avenue, according to the crash report.

Busco was allegedly found with the drug in his 2010 blue Ford F-150 pickup truck.

New Brunswick Fire Kills 73-Year-Old Stockton Road Resident

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On June 28, at approximately 12:44am, the New Brunswick Fire Department and city police responded to a fire at the home of Loretta Katko.

The home was under a heavy fire that led to extreme damage on both the first, and second floors of the home, located at 29 Stockton Road, in the Edgebrooke section of the city's First Ward.

According to a press release published by the New Brunswick Police Department, "Upon their arrival heavy smoke was observed pushing out from the eaves of the structure."
