CLINTON, NJ—A former Middlesex County probation officer got a taste of the law when she was sentenced to three years of imprisonment for accepting bribes from a defendant.

Rhonda Battle, age 48, is now staying at theEdna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women, where she is expected to serve at least two years before she will be eligible for parole.

As we reported, she had reached a plea agreement with the prosecutor and pled guilty to a count of official misconduct.

She admitted at the plea hearing that she accepted money in exchange for ensuring that one of her subjects did not end up on a random drug testing list because she knew that they would fail it.

For a criminal defendant, failing the test would result in a violation of their court-ordered probationary term and likely lead to further legal complications.

Battle accepted the bribes during 2014, as well as a $400 payment in December of 2015.

According to a release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, as part of the plea deal, Battle has given up her position and will never be able to work a public job in the state of New Jersey again.

She was previously a probation officer for the Superior Drug Court program, which was under the supervision of Judge Lorraine Pullen at the time.

The Drug Court Program offers counseling, rehabilitation, and probationary terms as an alternative to incarceration for first time offenders of drug related crime.

The criminal case against Battle was handled in Union County’s Courthouse to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.
