NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—City police are investigating the assault and robbery of a Rutgers-affiliated man by a group of four males on Senior Street, according to a university crime alert.
The incident occurred between Wyckoff and Sicard Streets on June 22 at approximately 12:15am, according to the alert issued by the Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD)
The victim, a 21-year old male who resides in New Brunswick, was struck by four assailants and robbed of his cellular phone.
The alert originally claimed the victim was “approached by four males who brandished a BB gun.”
However, New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) is the lead agency investigating the incident, not the RUPD, which publicized it.
According to the response to an Open Public Records Act request filed with the NBPD, “the victim believes one of the suspects possibly possessed a handgun which the victim believed to be an imitation firearm.”
According to the alert, the victim declined medical attention while at the scene. The alert also reported that, as far as the suspects were concerned, “descriptions are limited at this time.”
The attackers fled “in a dark colored sedan in an unknown direction,” according to the crime alert.
However, NBPD Captain JT Miller told New Brunswick Today that “the assault occurred on Senior Street and the four males suspects fled in the direction of Easton Avenue.”
The incident marked the ninth RUPD crime alert for the New Brunswick campus this year, and the first since the end of the spring semester.
