NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) is investigating a shooting that injured a 19-year-old resident in the early morning hours of Monday, June 19.

According to the police statement, the victim was with friends outside of building 1 at the New Brunswick Apartments, located at 33 Commercial Avenue, shortly after 12 am, when he was  shot in both legs.

The shooter, who was accompanied by two other men at the time, is described by police as “a black male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and white bandana around his neck.”

“He is approximately 5’10” to 6’0” in height and thin build,” read the NBPD press release.

Two other men with the shooter were described as a black man and a Hispanic man.  Police say the Hispanic man had curly hair with a gray t-shirt.

As for the 19-year-old victim, he was transported to RWJ University Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Just six weeks earlier, on May 6, two juveniles were also hospitalized after getting shot near building 6 of the complex.

The shooting came shortly after “a Rutgers Police Department officer observed a large fight near the same location of 33 Commercial Avenue in which a juvenile was arrested after assaulting several others with a baseball bat,” according to police.

One resident said he is surprised that shootings continue to occur in that building complex, despite the Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) headquarters being a few feet away.

Police ask anyone with information regarding the shooting to call Detective Brandt Gregus at (732) 745-5217.
