PISCATAWAY, NJ—Police announced on June 22 that they had arrested and charged Jahmeel Stevenson, age 21, with fatally shooting his 24-year-old brother six days prior.

No motive has been made public for the killing, which took the life of Henry Stevenson, Jr.

According to the criminal complaint provided by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO), authorities believe Jahmeel Stevenson caused the death Henry Stevenson, Jr. by purposely shooting him multiple times with a firearm on June 16.

Police were first notified and responded to the scene of the shooting within the area of West Third Street and Poplar Place around 7 p.m. that evening.

The victim, and possibly the defendant, lived in a home at the corner of the two streets, located three blocks from Rock Avenue.

Upon their arrival, the complaint says police found Henry Stevenson, Jr. on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.

Henry Stevenson, Jr., was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was later pronounced dead later that night.

The arrest of his younger brother came on June 20, and charges were formally filed on June 22, the same day the MCPO announced the case was solved.

On June 30, a Judge ruled in favor of the MCPO’s motion for pretrial detention, meaning that Jahmeel Stevenson will remain behind bars as the case against him moves forward.

The accused appears to live at or near the scene of the crime, and remains in the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center awaiting trial.

He faces charges of:

  • murder 
  • hindering
  • tampering with evidence
  • unlawful possession of a weapon
  • possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose

Jahmeel Stevenson was charged on June 22 after an investigation conducted by Detective Kyle Weaver of the Piscataway Police Department and Detective Eric Larsen of the MCPO.
