NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) is investigating a robbery that led to a footchase and the victims being threatened with a sharp object, according to a Rutgers crime alert.
The incident occurred in broad daylight at 5:50pm on May 11 at one of New Brunswick’s most interesting open spaces: Antilles Field.
The two-tiered field is located on the Douglass campus of Rutgers University, on a ridge high above Route 18 with an impressive view of downtown New Brunswick.
The victims, who the alert noted were “not affiliated” with the university, were apparently playing soccer there when two “perpetrators” took unspecified “personal possessions.”
The soccer players were fast enough to catch up with the thieves, but then they were threatened with a “sharp object,” according to the alert.
“The victims then pursued the perpetrators towards Chem Drive, where the perpetrators then threatened them with a sharp object, before fleeing in an unknown direction.”
“Chem Drive” is short for Chemistry Drive, a dead-end campus road that connects to George Street.
According to the alert, “descriptions [of the perpetrators] are limited at this time.”
The Rutgers Police Department asked that anyone with information, or who might have been in the area at that time, to contact the their Detective Bureau at 848-932-8025.
