NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Three men were slashed or stabbed at approximately 2:44 am on April 16 following a birthday party on Delavan Street, according to NJ.com.

The injured partygoers were all members of the same family including two brothers and their father.

One brother was reportedly celebrating his 30th birthday, but ended up taking a family trip to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

There, he received nine staples to close a “deep gash” in the back of his head, according to the report, while his brother and father also received treatment for “non-life-threatening injuries.”

According to the New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD), “a fight broke out between multiple combatants in the driveway between 103 and 105 Delavan Street,” which is located between Commercial and Throop Avenues in the city’s Second Ward.

“The fight escalated quickly as the other brother and father intervened, family members,” reported NJ.com’s Spencer Kent. “That’s when one of the attackers pulled a knife and started slashing.”

The man’s brother and father came to his aid and the three attackers reportedly fled after someone yelled that they were calling the cops.

The stabbed man told Kent that he did not know the three men or why they came to the home.

Police did not publicize the incident initially, but they confirmed to Kent that they had arrested 27-year-old city resident Gabriel Galindo-Fernandez in connection with it.

Galindo-Fernandez was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.

According to the NBPD Captain JT Miller, “The initial police investigation suggests that a verbal confrontation at a birthday party turned physical and multiple victims were stabbed/cut as a result of the fight.”

Galindo-Fernandez, along with two other men, allegedly arrived at the scene in a taxi, and began assaulting the birthday man in the driveway of the home, according to the NJ.com report.

Police said they arrested Galindo-Fernandez “without incident.” He has been held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction since April 16.

According to the jail’s records department, he is being held on no bail as a result of the aggravated assault charge, awaiting trial under the state’s new “bail reform” system.

He also is being held in lieu of $1,000 bail for two contempt of court charges, one in New Brunswick and another in North Brunswick.

The records department also confirmed Galindo-Fernandez had an “INS detainer,” which means that he would potentially be held for additional time to allow for him to be turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
