NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) confirmed that one person was arrested early morning on January 7, after attempting rob Dani’s Deli And Grocery Store on Somerset Street.
Charles Bivens, a 32-year-old from Highland Park, was later released on January 10 under New Jersey’s new pre-trial detention policies.
Bivens was arrested and charged with Robbery and Tampering with Evidence, according to the NBPD spokesperson.
Vicky Sanchez, the store owner told NBT that the thief threatened her and that a customer who had entered the store previouslly was able to aid her during the event.
“Call the police,” screamed Sanchez, when threatened by the thief.
The would-be thief then took off when seeing the customer with his phone.
Bivens apparently walked down Louis Street towards Suydam Street, as the customer alerted police of his location.
Bivens was arrested at approximately 8:35 am, according to NBPD Captain J.T Miller.
“There were no weapons involved with the robbery attempt and no injuries reported,” said Miller.
“The police told me if I see him outside my store to call them,” said Sanchez, concerned that Bivens could strike again. Her store had previously been robbed in the early morning when a man threatening to stab her took about $600.
Police advised people that might come into a scenario like this one to be careful as the other person could cause seriously harm to you.
