TOMS RIVER, NJ–Police say they arrested a man on November 29 that intentionally burned a 6-year-old kid under his care with a cigarette lighter at a residence in Toms River.

Kareem Hayes, a 36-year-old man from New Brunswick, is behind bars at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River, according to a post on the Toms River Police Department Facebook page.

Toms River Police spokesman Ralph Stocco said that an investigation done by the Toms River Police Detective Thomas Grosse, and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit, Detective Lindsey Most. 

The victim suffered second-degree and third-degree burns to the face, neck, and ear, according to Scotto, adding that Detectives determined that Hayes had “purposefully used a lighter to burn” the child.

Hayes faces charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child, and is being held on $250,000 bail at the Ocean County Jail.
