NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—City police are investigating a report of gunshots fired in broad daylight near Douglass campus of Rutgers University.
The incident occurred around noon on December 2 at the intersection of Jones Avenue and Seaman Street, one block from the Jameson dormitories in the Second Ward of the city.
Though New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) is investigating the alleged crime, it was Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) that notified the public about the incident.
NBPD is known for being secretive about their investigations, while RUPD has expanded their crime alerts system to include serious incidents that occur near their large campuses in New Brunswick.
"In this incident a local resident reported seeing a male who was standing in the intersection point and fire a handgun towards the direction of Commercial Avenue," read the RUPD crime alert. "The male then fled on foot into the City and away from University property."
"The perpetrator was described as a black male wearing all dark clothing and a wool cap," read the alert.
The alert also noted that police patrols had been increased in the area following the reported shots.
There are no known injuries as a result of this incident. Police patrols have been increased in the area.
