NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Believe it or not, this game was tied 7-7 at halftime, but ended with a total of 53 points on the scoreboard.

It was a tale of two halves for the New Brunswick Zebras football team, who were clicking on offense in the second half and pulled away from the Edison Eagles on homecoming night to pick up another Red Division win.

It was also a big night for Zebras quarterback Jah’Bree Seawright-Jeffery, one of the team’s most gifted and talented athletes.

Seawright-Jeffery, who was also named homecoming king, turned in a career-high performance of five passing touchdowns on 14 of 20 attempts, tearing up the field with 319 yards.

To warm up the offense, Seawright-Jeffery found tight end Curtis Revan wide open in the right corner of the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown.

“On offense we were just clicking on all cylinders, like everybody came ready to play,” said Seawright-Jeffery. “It wasn’t like a one person show. Everybody was family today.”

On homecoming night the New Brunswick community was out in full force at Memorial Stadium.

Everyone was feeling the homecoming spirit, from the security guards who keep everyone safe throughout the game to the student ROTC program leading the national anthem, and the cheerleaders that performed at halftime.

After a slow start the game was tied 7-7 at halftime after both teams scored touchdowns in the second quarter.

This game was ridden with penalties. The yellow canaries were all over the place, as New Brunswick and Edison combined for a grand total of 29 penalties, which kept scoring to a minimum in the first half.

German Pimentel was clutch, snatching 3 catches for 49 yards, each of which converted crucial third downs into first downs.

Kadas Reams erupted, tormenting the Eagles’ cornerbacks who couldn’t guard him. He finished with 201 yards receiving on 7 catches.

His touchdowns were of 14, 44, 50 and 53 yards.

Commenting about feeling a mismatch with Edison, Kadas Ream said, “Yes, I just told [Seawright-Jeffery] like throw it up and I’ll make a play for him. I trust him”

“I feel good tonight. It’s a good win on homecoming.”

The Zebras’ defense proved worthy as well. They forced Edison’s quarterback Justin Turner to 29 times.  Only nine of those passes were completed for just 85 yards, and Turner was sacked four times and intercepted twice.

The Zebras’ run game was not at its best, but the return of Dylan Johnson and his big play capability contributed an 82-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter. He carried 23 times for 106 yards.

Edison was looking to utilize their elusive running back Stewart, who would break free every for big gains. He would score rushing touchdowns of 2 and 44 yards, compiling 172 yards on 17 carries.

“We got to keep grinding in practice and get better every week, and come out and beat Old Bridge next week,” said Jeffrey-Seawright.

The Zebras will host Old Bridge (3-1-1) on Friday, October 21 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.

New Brunswick will be looking to avenge their 12-26 loss in the semifinals of the playoffs last season.

With Old Bridge having tied Edison 42-42 and defeated Piscataway 24-20, the outcome of their re-match with the Zebras is hard to predict.  New Brunswick beat Edison 39-14, but lost to Piscataway by the same lopsided score.
